What should i do?

I did ask for some advice the other day about feeding our new puppy.

When he came to us on tuesday he had been previously eating asda tinned puppy food and people advised us to slowly swap him over to something else.
On tuesday evening i mixed some of his asda food with some other food and yesterday i did the same and he seemed to be doing a poo less and they were much easier to clean up.
Today he has had some more food but he has now just had a bad tummy, very messy! I have a bit of the asda food left, shall i give him that later or stick with what he's nearly swapped over to?
Also shall i feed him later or not? I dont want to make him feel ill.

All wet food has a very high water content, you would be better feeding a quality dry diet.Burns, james welbeloved, royal canin, nutro are some.

Hannah I thought you had got some James Wellbeloved?

Wet food is mainly moisture (water) so like Clare said you would be better off feeding a quality dry food. Orijen is a biologically appropriate food; 70% meat, 30% fruit, veg & botanicals, no grains!

I have got some james belloved but i only had one sachet and i didnt want to give him just one sachet and then swap so i thought the butchers would be ok.
Shall i buy some dry food then or james belloved and swap him over?

Re: What should i do?

Hannah any change of food needs to be done gradual over a period of about a week or so the change in a few days isnt enough time to get his tummy to accept the new food , as Allan has said wet food is primarily water so will give soft poo , you need to stop and think carefully what your plans are about feeding , Asda tinned food isnt great but as its what he is used to it needs to be fed along with whatever you intend to swap it to for a longer time a dry food is better such as the James wellbeloved you mentioned you had bought .As long as its puppy dry food as the size of the kibble in adult food is too big and a pup needs a higher callorie intake so puppy food only . I saw that he had been fed just twice a day , have you increased this to 4 times yet ??? dont forget little and often is better than a big meal . Are you measuring the amount you are giving ?? he may have too much food in which case it would give him a dickie tum .

Get the JWB puppy complete, and give that to him with water, (put hot water in first, then cold to cool it - the hot water makes it into a gravey!)
If you want add some fresh mince which has been fozen and then naturally thawed or some tinned tripe as well, but reduce the amount of compete you give.

Re: What should i do?

Thanks for the help guys.
I think my boyfriend and i were just a little bit niave and thought that dogs can swap and change food whenever they want and that it wouldnt upset their tummy so we bought a couple of different types to try.
We had a few sachets of the butchers so i thought to slowly move him over to that and if he liked it i'd buy some more.
I did buy some dry food, its the iams one.
I feel bad now for the poor little puppy. He seems ok, he's running around playing but i dont want him to have a poorly tummy.

O god- i tried this once when my pup was younger- made his stools all soft and yucky- it's probably butcher's that cause his diarreah.
It has loads of additives and colourings too- will probably make the poor pup hypo
I would swap him on to another food. I would personally recommend nature diet as I like the fact that it has no additives and has never made my dog ill etc- it is a complete and holistic diet too. They provide a puppy nature diet for 0-aprox 6 months.
Natural Dog Food and Healthy Pet Foods, UK - Nature Diet

I also believe that Nature's menu is good and that they have a junior ( puppy) range.
Puppy food - Natural puppy foods from Natures Menu Junior dog food range

Which ever food you choose you will need to make the change gradually- otherwise you can expect him to have tummy trouble.
Hope this helps
