cutting claws

i think i need to cut my dogs claws they are getting bit long now. is it ok to cut them yourself or is it best to get a vet to do it?? how much would a vet charge for it?

ive watched videos online how to do it, luckily my dog has white/clear claws so its easier to see the quick. im not sure if it would be worth spending £10 on some proper cutters tho =/

Re: cutting claws

hold the dogs paws so the dog is comfortable and do each one by taking the ends off only, then next week do the same again. If you can SEE the vein Clearly then you will know how much to cut off but dont go TOO near it, make sure you have some white between the cut and the vein. I do all mine myself, nerve wracking at first but then I got the hang of it. My collie have long fur over his paws, so I get a pair of tights and slip the dogs paw into the leg and make a few little holes for the nails will go through, then I pull up on the tights slightly to pull the fur away from the nails, and hey presto a full view of the nails and no fur getting in the way.

Re: cutting claws

We got a pair of nail trimmers for bout a tenner from pet shop, like a pair of scissors that close around the claw, we have found it quite easy cutting Poppys nails. Definatley get some at around £7-£10 for the vet to cut them they will have paid for themselves after first visit to vets

This is a very good pictoral discription on how to clip the claws.

Re: cutting claws

HI,
i use a hand held small cordless drill (those for modelling/hobbies)
the trick for me was to habituate my doggies to the noise and the vibrations...
put on low, is very good...costs about 30£ from Maplin and it's actually fun to do the whole thing....it is very slow the whole thing though... and sometimes i don;t do all them in one go

Re: cutting claws

Most dog groomers will cut nails and they are usually cheaper than the vet!

Re: cutting claws

My vet has been charging me just 2€ when she has cut Pili's claws. Thing is, this has been while she's been having injections (Pili, not the vet!) and her next appt isnt until Dec when she is going to be chipped. I was thinking about getting some clippers and starting to do it myself as well.
How often does it need doing? Is it a set number of approx weeks apart, or do you play it by ear?
Thanks

Ang
