How often does it need doing? Is it a set number of approx weeks apart, or do you play it by ear?
Thanks

Depends on how quickly the dogs claws grow, they are all different, also where you walk them.
Little and often is the key, a lot less likely to catch the quick that way.

Re: cutting claws

I trim my dogs nails myself - they used to fidget at first but are used to it now - i usually give them a chew stick to keep em occupied - I do little and often - worst ones to get to are the dew claws

Once you've got them, you've got them - I use mine on the indoor cats claws (she can't retract them and used to get stuck on the carpet!!)
and also on the rabbits - so have had my moneys worth

ive watched videos online how to do it, luckily my dog has white/clear claws so its easier to see the quick. im not sure if it would be worth spending £10 on some proper cutters tho =/
I do it myself, however I bought some proper dog nail clippers from my vet. They are alot better for dogs than using human clippers unless you really know what you are doing, because the angle of human clippers can sometimes mean that you accidentally expose the quick.

You need to make nail clipping a positive thing for your dog, as many don't like it.
I clicker trained my dog to present me with his paw and allow me to clip his nails. I still reward him by giving him a treat after every few nails to make sure it continues to be a super positive experience.

Hope this helps

Re: cutting claws

I am a coward, vet nurse does Bobby's.
I take him to vets for flea drops so the vets is associated with less terrifying, treaty visits, not the nasty ones. I ask the vet nurse to do them if they need it.

Re: cutting claws

My Sam won't let us near his feet. I didn't want to upset him so I tried Serene-Um pills to calm him down but they didn't work at all! It looks like a visit to the vets is in order.

Re: cutting claws

I have been cutting Hedley's with the help of lots of treats and a pair of pet nail clippers that look like a small pair of scissors with short blades and a sort of hole that the nail fits in. They sell them at pets at home, but I got ours from ebay for about a fiver. They are for a small dog or a pup though. I also got a PediPaws from ebay for about £5 but it will take him a while to get used to that. He was happier with the clippers.

Re: cutting claws

I bought a pair of dog nail clippers for £2.50. They're like the ones that the manicurists use when they trim acrylic nails (if you know what I mean). Meadow has black furry paws and black nails so it was a bit scary at first but now we're both used to it Also, if you do want to do it yourself, ask you vet to show you how to do it rather than letting them do it for you. If they're gonna charge you, you might as well get a free lesson in the mix.
