Dog Treat Help please
Hi Everyone,
My boyfriend and I are getting our first puppy tomorrow and he will be 8 weeks old. Today i bought some treats especially for puppies but i have just noticed on the packet that it says suitable for puppies from 3 months. Is this very strict or will the odd one not matter while he's still 2 months? Any advice would be great, Thanks, Hannah |

Re: Dog Treat Help please
Thanks for the advice! I think we'll probably just do as you suggest and just see how he gets on at first and give him some of his dry food as a treat.
We are so excited and cant wait to pick him up tomorrow! |

Re: Dog Treat Help please
He's a King charles cavalier. I'm not sure what the owners have currently been feeding him but i have bought a small bag of the dry Iams puppy food and some sachets of wet puppy food. I suppose it might be best to buy what the owners have used as he'll be used to that?

Re: Dog Treat Help please
You should keep him for there diet for a little while as it will help him settle, the move alone could be enough to upset his tummy, and giving him different food might make that worse. James Wellbeloved is a good complete food.
Mine was on it before he came home and and had canned tripe or fresh mince for a while. Your breeder should give you a feeding chart, if they don't there are plenty of breeders that come here that would be able to help you. I would get yourself a DAP plug-in infusior, it gives off doggy phemones (don't worry people can't smell it!) and that will help him settle. You can get them in pet shops and vets. |

Re: Dog Treat Help please
Its always advisable to feed what the breeders have been giving , call them tonight to make sure you have his food before he comes tomorrow , if you search this site you will find previouse posts where food has been a much debated topic , if your not sure as to the quality of his food you can always ask and post on here later to get some advice , if the food he has been fed on isnt very good you must still feed that but you may change it gradually over a period of about 10 days gradually lessening his old food adding in the new food till you are completely new food . A change too quick will result in your pup having the runs because of the change in his diet . treats are best avoided at the moment and as said before use his kibble if needed to reward . always check the feeding guidelines on the back of the food as to daily allowance some foods will differ depending on quality but best to split his daily allowance into 4 small feeds then as he gets older you can reduce to feeding 3 times and eventually at about 6 months to 2 times a day .
The guidelineds on the pack are just that some foods will state too much and so adjust accordingly you dont want a fat puppy lol. He may have the runs for a day or so due to change of enviroment and being nervouse but he should soon settle , dont be worried if he isnt interested in feeding for a while he may just be getting used to his new home , but definately avoid anything else at the moment treat wise till at least 3 months and even then it may just be as good to take tip bits out of his daily allowance . Good luck with your new addition any further questions dont be afraid to ask we will all help at the thought of seeing new pups photo .

Re: Dog Treat Help please
are you crate trainning? I know it seems cruel putting the puppy in a "cage" but it will help speed up the trainning.
I didn't used pads, we just used newspaper and then after he had his jabs moved the paper into the garden (we have a lot of foxes come into our garden and although its safe to let a un-jabed pup out you need to disinfect the area) |
