House vs Flat - Debate maybe?????

OK!

Following on from my RANT!!!! post re: taking our puppy over to my mums so he can have a run about in her garden now that he is 12 weeks and 3 days old and as from today he has had all of his vaccinations, it has got me thinking.

How many of you out there from the day you get you puppy / dog / kitten / cat house train your pet to use the garden facilities of your house???

Flip Side...

How many of you from the day you get your puppy / dog/ kitten / cat, house train your pet to use puppy pads as you live in a flat that does NOT have any garden facilities???

OK! NEXT......

Do you think about the health risks of taking your dog or cat in a garden where although there have been no other dogs or cats there may have been foxes?? Our vet last week told us that a fox who might have been carrying the parvo virus could have left the virus in the garden 2 YEARS AGO and your animal might pick it up if not fully vaccinated?????

We live in a 1st floor flat, puppy is using puppy pads "when he feels like it" its driving us mad lol he's being relativley good at the moment though, but he had his 2nd jab today and we've been told to wait another 7 days before taking him out (we are nearing the point of pulling our hair out) we have a new puppy, we just want to go for walks and to be able to train him properly.

Now this can be a debate if you like? I don't mind

I'm interested mainly in what people say about taking their pet out into their garden if not fully vaccinated??????

Enjoy!!!

Re: House vs Flat - Debate maybe?????

I would be house training my puppy from the day i get him/her home. Without the use of pads.

The garden is enclosed so no dogs will have been in and we don't have foxes around here.

Re: House vs Flat - Debate maybe?????

We live in a house with an enclosed garden and our dogs over the last 40 years or so have always been trained to use our back garden and all those dogs only ever had their puppy vaccs and no boosters. I'm not sure that the dogs from the 60's that we had even had the first vaccinations but they all lived to healthy old ages and hardly ever had to go to the vets. I know the odd fox does come in because I had a rabbit killed a few years ago. I've never been advised by a vet not to let dogs go in your own garden before.

Our puppy who is now 6 months old has been completely house trained for the last few weeks now and always asks to go out.

Its probably people like us who dont have access to garden facilities and have to house train their dogs that way.

Nope nor me. In my opinion it kind of tells the dog its acceptable to pee/poo inside as long as its on a paper thing!

The people i know who used these found it took a lot for the dog to be 100% house trained.

But i can't speak from experience. I trained our Lab to go straight outside.

Re: House vs Flat - Debate maybe?????

I have only had one puppy when living in a flat and she was already treined to go on newspaper when we got her. We didn't havea garden but caried her around and took her to friends houses who had vaccinated dogs and enclosed gardens. Once she had all her jabs we started taking he to the park for a pee loads of times a day but she wasn't fully toilet trained until we moved out the flat when she wa 4mo.

I had dogs in flats but they were already toilet trained.

All my dogs I had I took into the garden from day one. I have an enclosed garden with no acess for foxes. I have never since used newspaper apart from the litter of puppies. Never used pads either.

Re: House vs Flat - Debate maybe?????

We used pads aswell, but we put them in dark places where Bailey would run to, where we were too late to pick him up and take him outside.
We never had a problem with housetraining.
