Re: Puppy Fat

its hard to get the ballance right with these dogs as prepared food often has the wrong stuff in it for thier metabolism . Im sure if you maybe reduced his food a bit more you could top up with veg if you pilp it first it digests better , carrots cabbage ect they do love veg and its callorie free so he wont feel hard done by lol , dont be tempted by the vets selling you thier low fat foods they are expensive and no better , just have him weighed every 2 weeks and keep up the walks , its slow to start but Jessie has lost gradually now since the end of jan when we knew we were keeping her ,about 3 and a half kilo to date and the work still goes on . lol he is great by the way , where did you rescue him from ?

Ooo no, would never do that, only if I'd researched it. I am normally of the school that a balanced diet but loads of exercise keeps a dog's weight to good levels. I have been proven wrong with this chubba though

I'm a bit rue to go beneath the 300g per day for feed... he's a pup still really, so don't want to go too mad and the vet wasn't concerned when he saw him, but suppose he's used to seeing fat dogs... so don't know quite how to take his opinion. I'll certainly do some veggie treats though

3.5 kilo? thats great!!!! well done, that's fabulous! Did you say she's 15 months? so was about 11 months when you got her? Just asking cos DJ is nearly 1 now

Got him from a rescue centre in Wales. He was there for 3 weeks only cos everyone who wanted him had kids and he'd knocked a kid over in his last home due to exhuberance He's a lovely lovely boy though, just unsure about his position!!

(gratuitous pics )

I wouldn't drop his food anymore than you already have, like you say he is still a pup really and is still growing and developing, cutting his food too much will cause more problems as he won't be getting the essentials to grow and develop properly.

He doesn't look fat at all, but maybe the pic's are deceptive?

Re: Puppy Fat

We got Jessie just before she was 1 and Daisy is 3 weeks younger they were from the same place but not same litter we only new the people we had her from because they looked so alike when they were younger we got chatting and realised we had got them from the same breeder . they still do look alike but jess is that bit heavier . Some vets would have you trim him up now some would say he is still growing and needs the callories , i would be looking to maybe not let him get any heavier and let him grow into his weight and hopefully by the time he is 15 months he should still be at about 32 klo and looking trimmer . The only reasn i would worry is because of what we have found with Daisy , she has a condition in her elbow like arthritis that could have been caused through too much exercise while in her growing stage 6-9 months and we were told as labs do suffer with joints to always keep her on the lighter side . Glad i didnt see the little lad i would have snapped him up .

From the side he doesn't.. it's really weird!! when he runs, it's like he's a sharpei, just mounds of skin and ... puppy fat?? from the top, he's like a sausage with nothing going in at all. He's a chunky build so maybe we're not going to get much definition.. dunno Not used to it

Tis difficult thinking about his requirements as a pup and then looking at his weight. I certainly don't want to drop his feed, but still can't understand the hunky chunkiness Maybe I should add more veg as Andrea suggests.. it may help the metabolism by burning off the fat..?

Yeah maybe maintenance weight try not to let him get any heavier let him grow into it . On the other hand you could have a very big boy on your hands some males do get quite heavy and thats just cos of thier structure

A neighbour of my moms has what they call a chunky type not very tall and quite round . i always think she looks fat but i think it must just be that she isnt too tall
