Health tests

Hiya guys was just wondering when the best age is for health tests to be done. I want Orla to be hip scored and to have the HV test. Also is there any others i should be thinking about for a pug.

Thanks in advance guys

Re: Health tests

Hiya,i know nothing about pugs but just answering til someone else comes along. We have our labs hip scored at 13 months don't knowif it's the same for pugs.
As you are in Hampshire i don't know if you've heard of Marilyn Baker who is in Eastleigh. We have always used her for hips, really knows her stuff .People travel miles to use her.
Hope you get good results

Re: Health tests

Hip scores cannot be truly recorded until 2 years of age. This is when a dog's growth plates have closed and the dog is no longer growing.

Pug World | Health Issues

You need to check for everything listed on that website.

Patellar Luxation, hip dysplasia and PRA/CERF are probably the only things you can get definitive answers about, but you can discover a lot about the potential for the other diseases by researching the dog's pedigree.

Just curious, does this apply just to pugs as we always get our labs done at 13 months which is recommended and accepted by kennel club ?

Re: Health tests

We have our pugs x rayed once they are over 12 months of age. Obviously, thats going by KC regulations for hips anyway, but for the HV, the extent of the problem cannot be seen until the skeleton is fully grown and that isn't until about 11 - 12 months. You could have one done younger and it be diagnosed with very severe HV, but once it reaches 12 months it may have "grown out of it" (for want of a better phrase!!) to a certain degree so the severity is less so. That is what happened with my own pug who has HV. Or even worse, the problem may not be spotted in a 4 month old pup when infact if you had waited til it had finished growing the HV would be evident...

Re: Health tests

Thanks for that info Jess2308. Orla is coming on to 15 months so she is old enough now to have the tests done just trying to find out where the best place is to have the HV test done
