Question Best food for sensitive dog

Hi iam new to this section, and need abit of help'
Ive got a 13 month old lab, for the last 6 months he has developed a very crusty nose. Our vet at first thought it was an auto immune disease but that was ruled out.
We have used a steroid cream which works but we can only use it for a short time then it comes back.
Weve been prescribed hills z/d food and i was wondering if this was the best food if it is an allergy?
He is otherwise very fit and healthy, ive attached a picture sorry its not the best. thanks jen an ted the lab

Re: Best food for sensitive dog

I wouldnt have thought his nose was food related but more like where he puts it!!!! Does he go rifling through the undergrowth it could be a sort of plant that is causing the allergy try just using E45 on it but Hills I dont rate just something that the vets get a good rate of percentage on !!!!!!!!

BTW welcome to the mad house

Try the E45 or sudocream or something like that on it if you have aloe vera even better it could just be like chapping from the cold from the photo he looks a very healthy dog and to me if it was a food intolerance he would have scaly skin elsewhere.

Re: Best food for sensitive dog

Get him off Hill's it's cack and will cause more problems than it solves. What were you feeding before the Hill's? Have a look at Orijen as an alternative.

I can't see it being diet related either but the vets can do allergy tests if that's what they really think and work from there rather than palming you off with a crap food they get a percentage on.

Re: Best food for sensitive dog

Weve been feeding him on iams large breed, he also has a cod liver oil and evening primrose oil capsule once a day, it keeps his coat nice an shiny. oh an a denta stick. Ive tried vaseline and aqueous cream on his nose but its made no difference, were running out of ideas.
The vet wants to do a biopsy if the food doesnt work, i didnt really want him to have another aneasthetic though, he was only castrated 8 weeks ago.

This is going to sound funny but try udder cream on it see if you can get a small pot and try it if it can sort out cracks on cows udders and it is absolutely fab on mud fever on horses we also used to use it on the ponies with sunburn on the noses

Re: Best food for sensitive dog

Iams isn't a good food either. If you feed a good quality food like Orijen you won't need to give any supplements.

If he's getting a good diet it may help with the problem but Hill's isn't going to be any good for his overall health long term even if it helps with his nose problem.

I would put him on a good quality food and try E45, sudocream or udder cream on the nose as suggested by our resident dog guru.

Re: Best food for sensitive dog

I feed my Akita on Nutro Sensitive chicken and she seems to do really well on this. I checked out orijen like AJ suggested and it seems a really good food maybe more so than Nutro but all dogs differ. that said i ordered a bag of orijen from zooplus.co.uk to give it try.
