Re: Dew claws
Its quite a big operation removing the dew claws in an older dog or puppy which is why those breeds that do have them removed have it done at 3 days old. Some vets will not do it unless the dog repeatedly rips them which is painful.
You could ask your vet what his opinions on removing dew claws is. But another alternative is to use vet wrap around the claws to protect them. My friend lure courses her whippet and she has dew claws still she protects them with vet wrap she says she'd rather pay out for that than risk the bitch catching them as she's running |

Re: Dew claws
Agree with Freyja, and I was under the impression (might be wrong) that it's the same as tail docking, in that you have to prove the dog will be worked to have this done?? I know a couple of people who breed working spaniels, and they have a very difficult time finding a vet that will dock tails and remove dew claws for them.

Re: Dew claws
Its quite a big operation vets are not happy to do it without a real reason, when they are taken off as a puppy its nothing of a procedure as the bone has not formed, to be done any later its like having our thumb amputated, harvey has ripped his pretty badly twice they are really sore when this happens the last time he did not so badly, went to the vets and she said 3 times didnt justify putting hin through it. If yours actually rips strap it as tight, closely as its comfortable and he will be ok, heals pretty quick, we only took ours as he was due for a check at the time so though we would mention it she did actually fine he had an infection so make sure its lept clean.

Quote:
Removing dew claws is allowed but it has to be done before the pups are 3 days old. My vet asked me to check with him next time I have pups so that he can check with it is still legal. So far it is still allowed. Its not just working dogs a lot of running dogs have there dew claws removed as they can easily catch them when they are running. The surprising thing is the fact that my ex racing greyhound still has her dew claws on. |

Re: Dew claws
thanks for the replies. i wasnt very sure if it was a good idea or not or how big the procedure might be. i can always ask the vet at a later date anyway.
hers are quite neat so maybe they wont cause any problems ![]()
