Alternatives To Commercial Treats

Do you use commercial dog treats, make your own or use simple alternatives like pieces of chicken or carrot?

I don't like using commercial foods/treats because they are so full of crap so I'm trying to deplete my supplies and just use chicken and carrots etc.

Would be interested to see how many people use alternatives and what they use?

Re: Alternatives To Commercial Treats

We use a mixture of both. Usually for training and at shows we use small pieces of liver, but if I've forgotten to get it out of the freezer we'll use a commercial treat such as schmakos. We used to give them chew sticks as a treat, but now we give them a raw carrot instead. And he bergamascos have a special treat - for some reason they love dry bread, so they get a slice each in a morning. (That's dry as in no butter on, not stale!) Gabby also has a really sweet tooth - she loves anything sweet, and because she's my favourite, she tends to get a little bit of most sweet things I have - and if I'm having some chocolate I have to have a packet of doggy "choc" drops handy so she thinks she's getting some of mine or she sulks for a week!

I ticked all 3 LOL
Mine like a Gravy bone now and again - they go mad for home made liver cake - it stinks of garlic but all my dogs go mental for it - they all like ham, chicken, cheese etc as a treat too.

You need some liver, eggs, self raising flour and some garlic about 3 cloves - blend it all up and bang in the oven for about half hour to three quarters - once cooled slice up - its just like bread/cake but stinks to high heaven - I dont know a dog that ever turned its nose up at it......there are plenty of recipes on the net for it - give it a try........

Will do thanks!

Must admit we give smackos and gravy bones atm but I would never dream of feeding pedigree food so not sure why I give pedigree treats!

I watched a programme on tv where the owners were told to try frozen veggies because the dogs love to play and crunch them. Or if they didnt like them frozen heat them up a little so theyre warm. It had that particular dog going crazy for them
