General brushing will help them like you would your own. As they get older there risk of tartar can increase and some breeds will have more tatar than others. Smaller breeds generally suffer more. Brushing will help alot.

Some good advice on Brushing Dog Teeth. Like humans, dog's need an annual cleaning and to prevent tarter just like humans, buy a canine toothpaste that helps to prevent it. And of course, brush every day (it will even help keep "dog breath" away.

Hmmm, I'm confused by this. Both our Yorkie's have yellowy brown gunk on their back teeth, not their front, and when we asked the vet about it he said it was normal and not to worry about it.
