Lower Body Paralysis

One of Chinese Sharpeis suddenly acquired lower body paralysis. We've seen a lot of doctores regarding his condition already and all of them is saying the same thing.

Apparently, he's vertebrae had impeded causing a nerve damage that leaded to lower body paralysis. I don't know what to do anymore. He had undergone therapy, and we had been really religious in giving him his medications.

DO enligthen us with your experience and suggestions...

Re: Lower Body Paralysis

Would an operation not correct the problem? Would probably be less expensive than a chiropractorand can have quite a good success rate.

This is a fantastic site where lots of people have dogs with back injuries and problems

Handicapped Pets - Elderly, Disabled, Injured, and Special Needs Pets

My GSD has cdrm so is partially paralyzed in his rear end. He is now on wheels which has greatly improved his quality of life.

If you dont want to go down the operation road then

Have a look here Dogswheels - wheelchairs for dogs

Hope this helps

Re: Lower Body Paralysis

Hello, I am sorry to hear about your dogs problem.

Was the condition sudden? was there an injury or did it just happen?

Basically the vertebra are a series of bones, these have a channel through the middle through which the spinal cord goes, therefore the vertebra provide stability and protection for the spinal cord. Between each of the veterbra is a disc which acts as a shock absorber. The discs can rupture and bulge which can cause problems, if it bulges it is also known as a slipped disc, this bulge can impact on the spinal cord and have paralysis

It is unlikely that the channel through the verterbra has narrowed unless the dog was born with this problem. My guess is that the dog has a slipped disc - its hard to establish this from an xray though not impossible.

If this is the case there are operations that can be done, has your vet given you advice around not getting the dog to jump etc? how long has this been happening etc

I work with dogs who have had operations for conditions like this - I'm not a vet but work as a hydrotherpist and myotherapy. If you want to ask any questions my email is rebecca.armstrong@brightpaws.co.uk

he hasn't been seen by the chiropractor because we couldn't afford the cost per session yet but he's still being seen by the head vet of prestigious clinic here in our area.

thank you so much for sharing this.. this is really helpful.. The vets didn't recommend any tyoe of surgery to us. Thtey were insisting on physical and steroid therapy only. (which clearly ain't working). We're actually thinking of getting him a wheelchair if worse comes to worse, him not walking again.

We feel very hopeful that he'll regain the sensation since he still could feel induced pain on his paws at the back...

i have so many questions for you... like, how long has your dog been paralyzed? does he still have pain sensation in the affected area? did he became depressed or sad over what happened?

hi there... thanks for this very kind gesture. i appreciate you replying to my post so much. this happened suddenly... the vet told us that it could be due to trauma from playing rough and juming all the time. One of the vet's suggest the hydrotherapy as well. But unfortunately, there's no establishments near our area that offers that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doensn't slip disc mishaps, usually causes pain to the dog? My dog after what happened didn't complain of any pain at all...

Re: Lower Body Paralysis

Hi
Yes slipped discs would cause pain - I didnt realise you had said there was no pain. for there to be paralysis there is something impacting the spinal cord I would say the key thing is to work out what that is - and to establish to what degree it is impacting and whether it could get worse

There is a condition called Spondilitis, which is inflamtion of the spinal joints which could be another reason for this. Spondylitis can also be caused and advanced through high levels of stress, nutrition, environmental factors, immune system imbalances so its worth exploring whether this is the case - if it is there are things you can do to help - which is probably what the vet is doing with the approach he is recommending!

where are you based?
