Archies on a special diet

On and off for a week or two Archie (8months) has had a bad tummy got bad again last night so mum took him to vets today and he now has to have a speacial diet. He is on Hills prescribtion i/d and royal cann tinned. Has anyone else had their pup on this food before and does it impove their tummy problems?
He has been barking most nights too (very unlike him) we think he has stomach cramps.
When we are in the house if its not rainning the backdoor is always open and he is a terror for eating ramdom stuff in the garden, so maybe hes just been eating too much rubish. Or is their other gastric problems that dogs can develop at this age?

For Fs sake! Vets! :-( Hills is the worst food out there! As long as your pup is on this food, i am quite confident that the tummy troubles will get no better, and that is exactly what the vet wants so you keep going back and spending money!

What exactly have the problems been?

never used Hills food, but i agree about vets keeping your animal ill so ya keep going back to them. They tried it with me when my old rottie had cancer, before she died they kept giving me these tablets and they just weren't doing anything, apart from inflicting stress as she had to be forced them, otherwise she would spit them outmad:

Re: Archies on a special diet

I walk a staffie with so called allergies, she is on hills z/d, a tiny tin once a day, nothing else, no scraps. She is overweight, god knows how on the amount she gets. She has no fur on her body except the back of her neck where she cant reach, due to scratching. Here's the thing, she starts to turn pink and itchy after she gets fed. I've never known a dog so itchy.

IMO, she had a simple skin irritation, the vet says,'oh she needs a special diet, and is allergic to 27 out of 50 things tested for' (yeah right!) and now the hills is giving her a skin problem and keeping her like this!

Of course but the owners don't want to try her on anything different in case it makes her bad, how can it be any worse?!

Our Daisy when we got her last easter had tummy trouble from the word go ,The breeder had been feeding the pups a mix of Bakers complete and cat food !!!!!!! oh my god you say , cut a long story short we changed her food and things didnt get any better we tried rice and chicken and changed her food again to JWB still no improvement this went on for weeks and weeks our vet was great and tried allsorts to illiminate any other cause such as infection or parasites but nothin was working . she bacame a litle under weight unknown for a Lab lol . In the end we were asked to try Royal canin tinned to start then after a week on that she went on to Royal canin hypoallergenic , this has no meat protien only soya potien and guess what 3 days later we got normal poo !!!!!!! she stayed on this for about 6 weeks .
As she was still only a pup this food wasnt suitable for longer she needed to go on to a higher callory food to help her grow , so she then went on to Royal canin labrador junior , all remained normal Horahhhhh .
Now we all know from research or reading other posts that these foods aint all they are made out to be i know but ...........
I cant knock the fact that as it was a food allergy and she hadnt been given the best start with being fed Bakers ( wash my mouth out ) This food did do the trick, often dogs will react to just one ingredient or a combination of ingredients be it either wheat , or the meat , so the soya elliminated the meat and whatever else was in it dint make her bad any more .
Always make sure any change of food is done slowly over a week or so gradually reducung the old food and increasing the new till its only the new you are feeding . Give the vet the benefit of the doubt as they have seen the dog and know from a medical point if it could be due to anything else but do make sure you are happy with what your being asked to do and purchase . You can often buy these foods off the web slightly cheeper than at the vets and make sure you ask as many questions at the vets as to why and how long this change is to be for , have a game plan so that if no improvement occurs in a couple of weeks you can discuss your next options . I was given lots of advise back then from people sudgesting yogurt , plain chicken and rice , ect ect but i think as long as the cause of the problem hasnt been pin pointed as such you need to be carefull as to what you give as it could only contribute to the recovery time being longer ,
Hope this helps .
Just to say Daisy is fine now and will eat whatever she is given with no problems . And as of this week we change over to raw im off today to get the freezer for the meat , and we get it delivered on tues , so fingers crossed all goes well with the swap from complete dry to real food .
