No but you have an idea what to expect!! and of course if there is a problem you wouldnt bred from it, so in effect you are minimizing the chances of anything be passed on to any off spring!

Keeping everything crossed for you and your lad!!

His parents have had all the breed relevant tests and the hips have bounced out of parents that scored 7 and 8, the worst in his 5 generation pedigree was a 16 which was breed average at the time - the nearest bad hips go back to his great great grandparents siblings (and they were less than the average for a clumber)! That is why hip displaysia is such a problem for breeders - needless to say his breeder is devastated.

The other problem has come out of nowhere and is hopefully a viral infection that is going to take some sorting out, the first test have come back for normal liver/kidney etc function and show nothing abnormal so far. This is the one that is far more worrying as although he doesnot appear to be in pain he is confused as to why he can't walk properly in a straight line.

Re: My poor boy

Well having had one of the less good days we are finally home from the referral vetinary hospital.

He has had an MRI and nothing has shown up, so good in that respect
All the bloods indicate nothing wrong
CSF Tap - results awaited

Suspected vestibular syndrome but not all the symptoms - no eye flicking and slow onset

Has anyone any experience of this in a young dog?

Re: My poor boy

I'm a suspicious cuss, and in one so young, look for the obvious causes. The prominent ones that spring to mind is the diet and any adverse reaction to a vaccine. Commercial pet food is the cause of many health problems, as there are no laws in most countries, to provide any standards. Try switching him to a raw meat and bones diet. Holistic vets around the world are finding that just doing that, can make chronic disease melt away.

Re: My poor boy

So sorry that your boy was diagnosed with bilateral hip dysplasia.

Was his entire spine x-rayed, or just his lower end?
I was just thinking that if there is nerve damage somewhere along his spine due to the dysplasia, it could explain the loss of balance.

Vaccinations did go through my mind but they were before Christmas and these symptoms are only from the last few weeks.

His diet is good (apart from the eating of what he finds on the floor) and whilst not RAW he is on Burns with Naturediet together with home made treats and the odd chicken wing/lamb bone.

again gone through my mind and I forgot to mention it to the specialist yesterday, (he did in fact have X-rays of most of his spine since we asked them to check that all the things that have gone in his mouth had gone out again when they did the one for his hips) but he had been absolutely fine until after two weeks of hydrotherapy for the hips - may try and ask him tho' on Monday but the tilt of the head and the fact that he loses his balance seems to be more an ear thing., The specialist did do the tests to see if there were any neuro things and he knows where his feet are, they don't drag and can hop etc

So I am open to suggestions for what people think and what they have done for their dogs that have a similar condition especially in such a young dog
