Our ancient old dog had disgusting breath and there really wasn't any thing could be done but we used something called Nolvadent which helped with his breath a bit. We also use Plaque Off but on him the tartar was too much to have much effect, the vet was able to chip some of the lumps off without putting him under. He was put under once in his last years when we needed to see what was going on and we did take the opportunity to have his teeth cleaned, I think he was 17 at the time (died at nearly 19) but we did agonise about the anaesthetic although they are much better these days.

Soemthing else that wasn't helping was him licking himself, he was on drugs that made him wee a bit and leak so licking that and having bad breathe - really reall really bad combination
