Views on Vaccination

There has been some debates on other forums re dog vaccinations. I have had by dog vaccinated every year as I always thought it was best for their health and to keep them safe from some pretty nasty canine diseases.

However a lot of people say that it isn't necessary they would have built up their immune system after their initial puppy vaccinations. Vets have been saying to vaccinate ypour dog yearly as it brings in loadsa revenue for them.

Also I have come across people who have bought VACCINATIONS of the internet and injected their dog themselves??? Is that okay or a bit iffy.

What do you think??

Re: Views on Vaccination

lots have been done in america about this
they say you dont always have to have the injections done every year infact some dogs you dont have to have done for the rest of the life depends on the immune system

Re: Views on Vaccination

We only have the initial course and have done for the last 30 yrs on an old vets advice, but ours never go into boarding kennels so if you ever intend to put your dog into boarding annual boosters are a must!!!

Re: Views on Vaccination

We only have the puppy vaccinations done and don't have the boosters. Like tashi, our dogs have never gone into kennels. I believe that if the dog is generally healthy and past the vulnerable stage of puppyhood, then repeated vaccinations are not necessary. I think far too much pressure is put on us owners with regards boosters.

I also only vaccinate as pups and dont do yearly boosters,i also only vaccinate my indoor cats(primary course only)i dont think it is nessasary for yearly boosters,a senior vet i know who owns a practice in my area told me himself that the animal is covered for a LOT longer than we are led to believeIts a personal choice thing,do what you think is right.

Re: Views on Vaccination

My WSD when she was about 18 months old or so caught parvo virus, she'd been vaccinated against it, and also had her yearly booster but still caught it. Luckily enough she had a cast iron constitution and made a full recovery. I've since been told by a vet that yearly vaccines aren't necessary, and being as my dog caught parvo when it was a relatively new virus to the doggy world I haven't had my dog vaccinated, or my cats. When I went away on holiday and my cats had to go into a cattery I went to the vets and they had their vaccinations so that they could go into the cattery but since then they've not been vaccinated (infact my elderly cat hadn't had any vaccinations until he had the ones for the cattery when he was 7 years old and he was a rescue cat). It could just be a case of vaccinations are better than they were years ago, more people have their animals vaccinated, all rescue centres vaccinate their animals before allowing them to be re-homed so the illnesses are naturally on the decline as it's not as easy to spread from dog to dog?

Re: Views on Vaccination

we are taking Daisy and Jessie next week for thier boosters both are just over 12 months old, as our cover with the vets includes yearly boosters i dont see why i shouldnt get them done . I,l get them weighed at the same time . Thing is the park we go to has loads of fox,s in it ad they are forever rolloing in the poo and will dive into any body of water clean or dirty so given there nasty habits i think its a good ides as fox,s carry nasty bugs .

Re: Views on Vaccination

I vaccinate my dogs every year as I take them to work with 2 days a week (I manage a kennels). Also I think it's a requirement for my pet insurance.
