I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a 6 month old Great Dane pup, he is lovely, adorable & full of energy but a few people (including my vet) has said he is over weight but i dont think he is! Can anyone help me by saying what his ideal weight should be at this age?

Re: Great Dane pup.
I've no idea about great dane pups but when we had William my greyhound he was 8 months old. He looked ribby to me and when walking him people would say he needed a good meal. I took him to a champ show under a breed specialist. He won puppy dog and had to challenge the bitch for best puppy. The bitch won. The judge came to me after and said he liked him a lot but he was at the gangly teenage stage and the bitch being younger wasn't. I said I was struggling to get weight on him but the judge said he doesn't need weight on it will damage his joints he needed to mature first.
The ginat breeds should not carry excess weight as a puppy as it can put to much strain on joints and cause problems in later life. |

Re: Great Dane pup.
Thanks for the help, i know being a giant breed he should not have excess weight because of his bones & joints. His ribs are lightly covered, you can feel his ribs easily & you can see his back two ribs most of the time. The breeder says that he is an ideal weight & size but having others contradict that is annoying as i dont know if im doing right or wrong.
