Poos - yuk!

Something that has been bothering me for a while, and just thought I would see what you guys thought...
Daisy has always had a really sensitive tum, ever since we first got her.

We have tried a range of foods, always being very careful with the changeover: Beta puppy which is what the breeder fed her, Nature Diet, JWB in the morning + Natures Menu frozen nuggets in the evening then on to Natures Menu tins instead, now Arden Grange puppy in the morning + Natures Menu tins in the evening. So, basically, fed good quality food.

On Beta & then Nature Diet every poo was slop, it got much better with the JWB & Natures Menu combo (but she stopped eating the JWB) and is basically the same now on Arden Grange + Natures Menu tins.

However, I would say that at least once a fortnight, she gets a REALLY bad stomach upset, with very bad diarrheoa. There generally doesn't seem to be anything which triggers it, it lasts for a day or two then goes away again. Although there was one episode which lasted a whole week! Plain chicken & rice has no impact on it at all.

TBH - these days unless it is really bad & constant, I don't even starve her for 24 hours, as it doesn't seem to make much difference. Although she didn't get anything a couple of days ago as she had a really bad episode (she actually pooed inside her crate whilst my hubby was dropping kids off at school and popping to the shop- he was only gone an hour!)

We treat her monthly with Advocate, and my vet has advised that as we don't live or take her anywhere near sheep there is no need for an additional wormer, and it would be overmedicating. Any thoughts on this??? I'm not sure...

We are always watching her to see if she tries to eat anything she shouldn't, so know it isn't this.

The vet doesn't seem to have any constructive advice, other than buying Science diet (from him of course!! I think not!) and I just wondered if anyone here had any thoughts about what is causing it or how we may able to stop it.

Help! I feel so bad for her

Re: Poos - yuk!

you may have to try the Hills perscription diet you don't have to get it from the vets as you can bulk order on line. Maybe try a tin or 2 from the vet yes I know it's dear but if it does the trick it will be cheaper than all the anti bs and jabs. I had to put my dog on this diet as I had tried everything else he seems to be allergic to some proteins. So far he has been fine.

First, has your vet tested for campylobacter? This could cause the symptoms.

If there is no campylobacter, it is likely to be a food intolerance. The commonest ones are to wheat, soya, less often maize and poultry - but it could be anything. You will have to experiment. You could start with lamb which is usually safe, or white fish, cooked with brown rice, add a vitamin supplement. Your pet shop should be able to get you a box of frozen minced lamb for dogs - or better use fresh human quality if you can afford it. Feed that for a few days and see if there is any improvement. At first you will probably have to give it extra time for any irritation in the gut to settle down. Once you have found a basic diet that doesn't cause bad poos, start gradually introducing new foods, different meats or vegetables, just one at a time, and give it a couple of weeks before trying something else new. If anything triggers the bad poos again, go back to the basic diet and let it settle again before trying anything else.

That there was an improvement with JWB is a good clue - it is gluten free. I feed my dog another gluten free food, made more palatable by mixing with a gravy made from Webbox chubs (those plastic wrapped sausage-shaped tubes of food, from Asda, much cheaper than cans) as it's gluten free too, mashed up with warm water, then mix in the dry food so it's all coated.

Drinking dirty water could also be a trigger. Don't let your dog drink from puddles.

No vet didn't really test for anything. She occasionally gets a slurp out of a puddle before I can stop her, but I generally catch her pretty quick now, but she also swims in ponds alot. If this is causing it, is there anything I can do? (She SO loves to swim!). Maybe a probiotic to help?

The food allergy was also crossing my mind, especially as she can't cope with cheap sausages (chock full of "fillers" surely) and when we went to a christening recently and she scarfed a load of sausage roles/buffet food from the kids (stopped them as soon as I caught them doing it) but she was really bad for about 2 days!

I saw a food called CSJ Champ with lots of testimonials for dogs with ongoing digestion problems, they do a wheat and gluten free version, and a herbal suplement to aid dogs with problem digestion systems. Has anyone heard of it? Actually tried it out? Any good?

Yes tried the CSJ food you are talking about that didn't help. There is a good probitic powder you could try I use Protect as this seems to work on my dog. But as I said before he had to go on the Hills. Just a thought have you tried Burns theirs is suppose to be good ( mine still coudn't tolerate this food )
