dog coughing

I am quite upset to learn that our 17 week GSD, Simba may have kennel cough, very close to tears in the vets when she told us

The vet didn't seem to supprised when she saw him, and said lots going round at moment, and could have picked it up from the puppy classes he goes to, (no other dogs coughing, that I heard)

He is well in himself, but I feel that we have let him down, silly I know, has anyone else experienced this with there pups?

Re: dog coughing

KC is only serious in very young pups and elderly dogs.

Dogs can pick it up quickly from other dogs,my bitch would always come down with it about two weeks after a show.
Has you vet given AB's ?

If so honey in warm water will help soothe the throat.

He should start to improve in a few days, just remember to keep him away from other dogs and dog populated areas.

Sorry dont want to butt into someone elses thread but what is kennel cough i know it is a cough(obviously) and is highly contagious but what is the virus and where does it come from or what causes it, having owned dogs for quite a few now none have ever had it.

Re: dog coughing

Daisy had it, but once she had some antibiotics she was right as rain. As has already been said, important to keep away from other dogs.
Apparently kids cough syrup works well too - tho I have no idea on dosage...
hope your pup is better soon

Thankyou, he is on antibiotics and had an anti inflamatory injection as well, not coughing as much now so hopefully getting better!

Re: dog coughing

all three of mine had it and it was a nightmare.

take three hyper vizslas and no going outside for walks.

i also took the steps of warning neighbours etc who owned dogs as it is airborn their dogs could be at risk too.

Wish everyone was that thoughtfull as you i met someone whos dog had kennel cough about 18mths ago i was so cross ide met her before but didnt really know her that well, when i met her this time she started to walk with me chatting which was fine about 5 mins later her dog started to cough and i asked her what was wrong and she said very casually thet she had kennel cough, i didnt know much about it but knew that it was highly contagious and one of mine at the time had dilated cardio myopathy and congestive heart failure was very suseptible to catching things and that condition(kennel cough) could have been fatal to him, ok she wasnt to know monty was so ill but my way of thinking is we dont know everything about everything so shouldnt put other animals at risk.
