Question Dog with sores on lips/ muzzle

Hi

My dog (German Shepherd) has had a rash for over a year now around her lips and muzzle, my vet has treated with antibiotics and advised me to try sudocream and that didnt work even afer upping the strengh of the antibiotics, so i had biopsys done around the muzzle and it was sent to a dermatoligist but nothing was found and there and there were no sore/ blisters around her anus or feet so ruled out some terrible disease i cant remember the name of.

My vet then continued the antibotics twice daily 500mg and gave steriod tablets 3 times a day and stopped taking the anti's after about 8 weeks and then weaned off the steriods and gave me a steriod cream to apply twice daily for the last 4 months. Over a few months it did ease but still there, and coming completly back, although on the whole this has reduced by half, it is still quite bad and makes me sad that i cant resolve it over this lengthy time as it looks so sore for her.

Has anoyne ever heard of this kind of thing or able to offer any advice or information, as i so want to get this resolved for her, she cant keep her sore lips with only steriod cream to keep it slightly at bay.

Any info greatly welcomed.

Re: Dog with sores on lips/ muzzle

Probably Anal Furunculosis or perianal fistula as it's also known. It's quite common in GSD's and GSD crosses. I lost my German Shepherd to this terrible disease five years ago.

Sorry was answering DT's post there not suggesting your dog has this.

Re: Dog with sores on lips/ muzzle

Have you tried Atopica? That might help but it's very very expensive. I tried it for my dog once and it was £28 for ten tablets.

Hi DT yes they did rule out the auto immune disease with the biopsy, and her food bowls are steel not pastic as i know some dogs can be allergic to these, i get a picture of it and post it here.

Many thanks

Re: Dog with sores on lips/ muzzle

If it is going to work though it usually works in the first 7-14 days so you would know if it was worth keeping her on it or not. My ex groomer had a GSD that used to rub her muzzle a lot and it was sore and her vet suggested Atopica and it worked for her.
Might be worth trying though.

Have you tried anti-histamines like Piriton or Atarax?

Re: Dog with sores on lips/ muzzle

Glad to read that AI has been ruled out! There are however I believe over 300 recognized stains and as many unrecongnised! Which was sadly what we were fighting!

Have you seen a referel vet?

Re: Dog with sores on lips/ muzzle

Sounds like the same thing, but just because furuncolosis is more commonly found around the anus and between the toes, ruling it out because it has not been found in these areas may not be correct. My neighbours' dog (Abi) has been diagnosed with it, and it's just in the nose area. However the treatment your dog is getting is the same as what Abi is getting now, and she is noticeably improved over the last week. The vet she first saw mentioned there can be a fungal element to it, did your dog's biopsy look at fungi?

Re: Dog with sores on lips/ muzzle

around two years back doe (my dog) had the same problem...it was winter so i thought that it was just due to the season. but the sore began to bleed and the matter was almost out of control...i visited my vet but the antibiotics he gave were almost uneffective. then my aunt in florida told me that it was due to some thiomine deficiency...she advised me to get some med with that mineral i got a med called petabs...there are many places where you can get these med...i got it from this page you can try thsi or search for sumthing else.
