Question Pain relief

I wondered if anyone knows of a drug that gives instant pain relief?
Alfie has got to the stage where he is basically ok, but every now and then he will do something silly and suffer with his leg for a few hours.
In the 70's or early 80's my vet supplied me with a small red tablet to use on my elderly Goldie at the time, when she had overdone things. She only had one in the evening and one next morning if she was bad.
They were great, instant relief, but I can't remember what they were called.
Any ideas?

Re: Pain relief

Prednisone is a steriod.

Most vets use rimadyl for pain relief I believe as dogs can be more sensitive then humans with abnomal bleeding etc!

Re: Pain relief

I think Rimadyl is used a lot by vets as a strong pain relief. Somebody I know has a labrador that's on them for arthritus. They are quite expensive from the vets though so she said she is going to get a prescription and get them off the internet for 73p each.

They didn't really look like smarties, they were very small, not much bigger than the mad smiley but a bit darker in colour.
Looked up that drug, looks a bit dangerous to me, and on one site it says it makes arthritis worse but covers the symptoms

The problem with both of these, is they take a few days to take effect
He has Metacam if the joint swells at all, but I don't want to give him too much at the mo, he is only 8 years and will be living on Metacam or similar for a lot of his later life
Thanks for replies though
