Question Bald patches

I had both my dogs groomed 5 weeks ago. My rough collie had been ill when I collected her from kennels the previous fortnight - very bloody diarrohea. Vet said it was a bug as it cleared up after anti-biotics. I had her fur shaved by the groomer. It is now growing back like a puppy. However, she has two large bald areas - one on each side of her, in front of her hind legs, (about 8 inches by 4 inches). The skin is a little flakey, like dandruff. She was swimmingin the sea last weekend.

My other dog is fine. Any ideas?

Tina

Hi,

is the only signs hair loss and a little flakey skin? are there any other apparant signs such as lesions? or a change in colour on her skin?

Hair loss, Flakey skin, dull or oily coat can be signs of a hormone imbalance, which can be prescribed by your vet, other possibilities could include an allergic reaction to either something in the sea, something you have changed at home etc, iot may even be a fungal infection passed on via grooming equipment, however your other dog would likely to have been infected if this was the case, is your dog itching at all? have you changed her diet?

I would advise a trip to the vets to check all is in order.

Re: Bald patches

Thanks. Vet hasn't a clue yet. Attacking on all fronts, antibiotics, anti-fungal shampoo, anti-flea drops and cod liver oil and evening primrose oil. Going back in 10 days. Mia has no itching, no change of diet, no change in behaviour or circumstances. The hair loss is quite sudden.Watch this space.

Unhappy Re: Bald patches

Yes, I'm afraid so. Unfortunately, I lost both my parents this year and was nursing my mother for months. My dogs did not get the grooming they needed and my collie's coat suffered. I decided cutting it would be kinder than her having to suffer hours of knot detangling. God willing, I'll never have to take that action again. My dogs are normally groomed regularly, teeth cleaned, lots of walks and well-cared for.

Re: Bald patches

Trev's had a bald patch on the top of his head, he's always sticking it places he shouldn't be, lol. I was reccomended Kelp, you just get it at holland and barrat, it seems to have really helped, they both have one a day, and Trev's patch is growing, and both their overall coat conditions are great xxx
