Re: Countdown to Dolly's Op

Just been thinking about what other advice I could offer, and it got me thinking - What type of floors do you have?

Wooden/laminate floors are very popular, especially with dog owners. We had a beautiful solid oak floor in our dining room, which is where Chance spent most of her time. Her bed is there, and as it is the room that leads to the garden the wooden floor is ideal for easy cleaning.

However, it is also incredibly slippy for a pooch on three legs and so we went to the extreme of carpetting the room. We have to be careful if she goes into any other room but at least when we see her in the morning (most excited time!) she is grounded and not likely to slip over and injure herself.

Re: Countdown to Dolly's Op

Thanks for the replies, especially Chance and Nonnie for the advice about what to possible expect post operatively. Really hope Dolly doesn't have to suffer too much but of course I'll do what I can to comfort her - I'm retired so I can spend as much time as necessary with her.

Chance, fortunately our floors are carpetted other than stone tiling in the kitchen so we should be ok with that.

I'm concerned about bringing Dolly home (on Thurs hopefully). It's looking like I'll be doing this alone - OH is being about as useless as a chocolate bloody teapot with this. Do you think she will be too uncomfortable in the back of my hatchback (her normal travelling spot), or should I get a taxi so I can hold her on my knee. I can make the back quite comfortable but I'm a bit worried about jolts, road humps etc. It's roughly a 20 minute journey to and from the vets.

Any thoughts on this?

Re: Countdown to Dolly's Op

Personally, i think she would be safer and more comfortable in the boot. You can put down lots of thick bedding (an old duvet works well), and this was she can find the position she finds most comfortable.

Just drive slowly and dodge the pot-holes.

My vet drove me home, and i sat with Oscar on the back seat.

Re: Countdown to Dolly's Op

Personally speaking I would DEFINATELY find a method of transport that means someone can be with the dog. Again, we were VERY Unprepared for her homecoming and my partner went to collect Chance alone.

Firstly, Chance 'bit' her whilst trying to get her on the back seat. Very out of character and clearly only because she was scared and in pain. The vet came out to assist and gave us a muzzle. She then set off but Chance refused to sit down and tried to stand up all the way home. The journey would normally take not more than about 8 minutes. On this day, it took over 30 minutes with all the additional stops required to settle her back down so she was safe. Maybe a big cushion in the boot would have prevented a lot of this but ever since then, we have always have someone driving and someone else in the back with Chance.

Even now, the journeys are slightly stressful although they are definately getting easier...

Sorry if this is against what you wanted to hear but I would hate you to go through what we did on that first trip.
