Question Anasthetics.

Our stud dog covered a bitch last thursday and last night the owner rang to say his bitch had swallowed a fishing hook thats become lodged in her throat and will have to have an anasthetic so the vet can x-ray her.
The vet didnt know how it would affect a pregnant bitch or her pups.
She advised the owner it could cause a miscarriage or even deformed pups.
Ive never come across a bitch so early in pregnancy that needed an anasthetic and was wondering if anyone else could shed some light on a possible outcome?
Cheers.

BlackCat is on a distinguished road
Re: Anasthetics.

Most anaesthetics used would cause a (hopefully) minimal reaction, but the risks are always there in pregnant dogs. It's weighing up the options though and for something like a stuck fish hook that has to be removed, a short GA may cause little effect.

Hope all goes well.

Hi the only time that I had a worry like this was with my old boy and I talked them into trying to do the x ray without an anaesthetic BUT big but he was a golden retriever not a bully can they not just give her the minimum of sedation

Re: Anasthetics.

I did mention to the owner that they should try and x-ray the bitch without sedation but by the time he had rang me the bitch had been at the vets half hour and was already under.
Personally I would have tried it without sedation first but some just go along with vets like they dont have options! She's a Bullmastiff so she may have kept still!
Hope it does have minimal affect. It would be such a shame if it all went wrong. Sods law aint it though, it couldnt have happened at a worse time
