neutering

I am picking up a rescue dog tomorrow but also my own dog is being neutered on the same day. do you think this will cause problems between the two dogs? ie will my own dog link the pain and the new dog and make him less likely to get on with her.

Re: neutering

Id personally delay one or the other.

Bringing a new dog into your home is traumatic enough for both parties, it can only be made worse by having a dog recovering from surgery.

The last thing your current dog will want is a newbie invading his patch when he's sore and groggy. You also need to keep him quiet and calm, are you going to be able to with another dog in the house?

I also don't think it would be a good idea for you to bring a new dog into your home when your other dog will be feeling under the weather. He will probably be very sleepy from the anaesthetic for the first 24 hrs so it wouldn't be fair to him. I wouldn't get another dog until he's recovered fully in a few weeks.

I think it depends on the dogs.

How old are they both? Are they playful or laid back?

my dog is 3 and the new one is about 8 months. We have recently lost a dog so our springer was pining and thats why we got another one. both dogs have met a couple of times and got on reasonably well - there was an odd bit of hiding toys but they are both generally very active and playful.

i think i am feeling more on the side of postponing the op but its just the vet seemed to think it was ok although nobody else i have spoken to agreed.

just want to make the right decision

If they're both playful dogs then I would postpone the operation, at least for a few weeks.

They'll want to be playing and getting to know one another and that will be no good after a major operation.

Re: neutering

Hiya, I would postphone the op.
My dog was spayed last week and although she wasn't in any pain when she came home, she was a bit drousy and irritable and didn't want anything to do with my other dog. Luckily he had brother next door to play with but I would wait until the new dog has settled in for a few weeks before you get your dog neutered.

xx
