coughing dog

Ok, so I know I should be more sensible and leval headed but if anything ails my own dogs all that is forgotton and ultra paranoia sets in
He is 6 n a half, Leonberger, bit lean but thats coz he has a dodgy hip.
Happy, never a good eater, very sensitive and very protective of me.
This last month every time he has a drink, he coughs? He usually gets a mouthful finds me and coughs it all over my lap!
He has always eaten grass so first thought ? lungworm??
He is a leo and although his line is more or les clear we do have a problem with laryngeal paralysis and dilated cardiomyopathy within the breed.
He is also very quiet today....been for a walk/swim and ok. He did run into the trampoline yesterday and bang his knee but actually seems fairly sound today.
Am I being a bit neurotic? I had to put my other dog to sleep last weekend and he is now my only dog so I cant seem to think straight as to wether I am being silly or have genuine concern??? Any suggestions appreciated...will have a word tomoz with vet also

Re: coughing dog

If your worried about lung worm they can have a blood test!! I have pug crosses and they have coughing fits all the time. With them though its all to do with the palate.

Re: coughing dog

My dog has always coughed after a drink the vet said its more than likely just the cold water on her throat regarding lungworm, there is a wormer to protect against, think its the milbemax tablets, your a vet nurse right?? well this may be the case of too much knowledge is bad knowledge and your thinking of evey possible thing you can think of, try not to worry and take him vets if it persists and he still doesnt seem himself. I'm sure everything will be ok, all the best.

Re: coughing dog

You are not paranoid, if it is a new condition that has only started recently then it has to be investigated.
So sorry to here about your other dog, it must make this one even more precious

Re: coughing dog

my dog has been diagnosed with lungworm which causes her to cough which she has never done before. She has had a treatment from the vet (not too expensive). Are there other symptoms - like wheezing or panting (and not from the heat), or being off their food? The Vet said he'd seen quite a few cases of lungworm recently. Not a happy dog at the moment but we're getting there...
