Nails

On recall this morning, my 6 year Goldie split his back nail.I only had them clipped 3 weeks ago.It bled for about 2 mins and then stopped. He limped a bit on the way home but has since been ok. The split is vertical. Do I wait and see or get him to the vets tomorrow. He is a martyr to his feet, and has had problems with his nails before.Usually they pull them out and bandage his foot. This really stresses him out. Any advice would be welcome.

Re: Nails

The only thing that concerns me about leaving a severely split nail, is the dog getting a nail bed infection.

Sometimes its worth getting the nail treated, rather than having a horrible infection requiring a course of strong antibiotics.
Also the healing process is quicker when the nail is removed.

One of my dogs was forever damaging his nails, and he had a nail bed infection on more than one occasion. One set of treatment cost me £170 just in antibiotics!

Re: Nails

start using cod liver oil etc.. and anything with folic acid in as that helps with skin/nails/feet. also use the stuff like cornercresin used for horses as i use it in my parlour and apply iol directly to nails to give them their strengh back and stop from splitting.

also when you get his nails done doe they file them afterwards as sometimes when the nails are cut if its a blunt blade or done wronly it leavs split ends which then can cause them to split.

dogs nails are the same as horses hooves or our nails. so use the same ointments and food supplements as this may help stop the problem from happening in future!

Re: Nails

Tell me about it! My vet charges £20 just for the bandage. It seem's it will be a visit to vet's tomorrow. We have his nail's cut every 2 month because he does split them. Poor thing isn't even allowed to have a ball thrown.Normaly he will take his time with recall but this morning he ran like a steam train.

Re: Nails

also buy some quick stop and veterinary wound powder as they help stem the bleeding. also if your pets in and out of water or moist conditions the nails can split this way too.

the nails like our own soak up water and become alot softer when wet so when they retract when drying out this can make them split

good luck

Could you not try having them cut once a month?

I "tip" my dogs every 2 weeks, and they have nice, short nails.
Oscars constant split nails were because of a foot deformity, rather than the length.

Re: Nails

it might be worth training yourself to cut them. the viens inthe nials will actualy grow back into themselfs the more often you cut them. for example cut them once every few days poss once a week but literally the tips until you get a desired lengh. its no good waiting every 2 months as youl never get them shorter as the nial will just grow back to that one lengh and the vein will stay inthe same place. there is a nw tool you can buy from america costs £80 but it actualy tell you where the vein is by having a red light system. red light pops up means its a vien, amber means close to veidn and then green for go. is your pets nails clear or black?

Re: Nails

For the split will he let u pop some nail glue or super glue on to fill the split and mebs save ur self a vet visit, then try all the supplements to help strengthen his skin hair and nails!
Be aware though brittle nails can be an early sign of hypothyroidism.

Re: Nails

Clear. Trouble is he's such a wuss, he doesn't like anyone going near them. It takes 3 vet nurses to hold him while the 4th cuts them!
