Dry food help

We have a 20 week old shih tzu and when we got her she was being fed eukanuba she wasn't eating very much of it but if she could get to the dry cat food she scoffed it back, we changed her to JWB and for the first few days she ate it then turned her nose up at it. I have persevered with it but she only seems to eat it when she is really hungry leaving it till night time, however if she can get to the cat food she will scoff it back. I am wondering whetherb to change her food again or stick with it. She is only having one poo a day which doesn't seem much. She is lively not thin ,but not fat she doesn't have a little puppy belly.

Any help appreciated

Re: Dry food help

Personally, id stick with it.
Some dogs realise that refusing normal food gets them tastier treats, and can end up being extremely fussy.

Your puppy wont starve itself, so dont worry if she misses a few meals. When shes hungry she will eat.

It might be worth putting the cats feed somewhere out of reach of the dog. Cat food is far more flavoursome than dog, so your pup may be holding out for that tastier stuff.

You could try time controlled feeding. Put your puppy and her food in the kitchen for a set amount of time, say 20mins. If she hasnt eaten after that time, lift the food up and offer NOTHING else until the next scheduled feed. They soon learn to eat whats offered, and when its offered to them.

This is quite typical of Shih Tzu, they're intelligent little dogs and certainly will hold out for something better if they think there is a chance of getting it. I would definately stick to one food if I were you or she may well lead you a merry dance. One of mine used to be exactly the same, he would go as long as a day or two without eating but soon gave up when he was hungry enough, he's not a big eater and tends to eat just enough to maintain his weight.

Re: Dry food help

Try mixing half of it with hot water so its mushy, then add crunchy ones, Ted likes that -or sometimes as a treat I put a bit of beef stock over it - yum!!
