Hair loss

My two bitches have lost hair on their tails over the past three months. The oldest one has a bald streak right down the middle of her tail at the bottom, the other has hair missing all the way down like a train track. They live outside in a kennel on a raised wooden platform with duvets as bedding, the duvets are washed and changed every week, they are regularly treated with frontline and they have never had hair loss before and it's only the tails. It is really bugging me.

Anybody have any ideas what the cause could be?

Re: Hair loss

Have you had their anal sacs checked recently?

Many dogs will nibble their tails when they become impacted and uncomfortable.

Re: Hair loss

My vet changed me from Frontline onto Advantix as she said this was a repellent to stop ticks etc attaching themselves onto a dog

Re: Hair loss

How much exercise do they get?
I took on a staff x who had bald patches on her bum and tail, she was doing it through boredom and stress.

Re: Hair loss

Its a common thing with whippets grehounds and lurcher types. Some of my whippets have had a bald bit on their tails although I have found that with mine it I have never seen it on the ones with dark coloured tails. I never seen is on Owen Tegan or Angel or the fawn twins but Bandit and Jasper have had it. I just left it alone and it eventually went. I also asked other people with whippets and they said theirs had had it. You often see them at shows with a bald patch on their tails.

Re: Hair loss

I think i will give the vets a try about the anal glands. They aren't bored, they are quite content and sleep most of the day, they get a good 2 hours walk a day and most of that is free running, when im not working they are out with me most of the day. Nothings happened for them to be stressed. I have never had this problem before and it's really bugging me as it looks horrible!

Vets first though that he had mange, from his last owner's being evil &$"$%"&
