Juvenile Cellulitis - horrible illness in young puppies

Just wondering if anyone else has had any experience of this horrible illness in young puppies?

My little 16wk old pup has now been officially diagnosed with it, but symptoms keep coming. We have been at the vets every day this week!

It first started off as an eye infection. He had an awful "cyst" on top of his eye, but vet thought it was where he might have scratched it. Two weeks later he still has the awful eye infection, and no amount of bathing, eye cream, drops etc seems to be working.

He then developed lethargy and depression, followed by limping. Despite painkiller injections he then got to the stage where he couldn't walk or stand and was hospitalised for 5 days. I was given a diagnosis of Juvenile Cellulitis on Friday, but then the weekend vet decided not to give him the cortisone treatment (only treatment apparently for this). He came home on Monday, on anti-biotics and seemed a lot more like a normal puppy. However by Wednesday he had deteriorated and was once again lethargic. His eye infection was awful and his eyes bled when I bathed them. The official diagnosis of Juvenile Cellulitis was made and we were given cortisone tablets for two weeks. I thought we had finally made progress.

Yesterday however, poor puppy would not let anyone stroke or touch him. He yelped at the slightest touch. Vet said to see how he goes, as he was still eating. However, he suddenly came running into the kitchen, yelping, and shaking his head vigorously and there was blood everywhere. I could see it was coming from his neck, but didn't know why so rushed him to vet. It seems now that a lymph node has burst, as this illness affects their lymph glands.

This is the most awful illness and if anyone has any info or advice about it I would be grateful. As it is so uncommon, I would be keen to know what the prognosis is for puppy's future, is it likely to affect him in later life, and if there are any more incidents or developments that I can expect.

Any advice gratefully received!

Thanks

Re: Juvenile Cellulitis - horrible illness in young puppies

Here that cold be of interest to you; its the story of one owner and his pup also diagnosed with the same disease..the pup had a extreme form of the disease and took 4 months to recover fully while normally it should be about 2 weeks and he did achieve full recovery although it may have affected a bit his development as he is smaller than he should be ..

Juvenile Cellulitis, immediate and aggressive treatment is critical.

It says it could affect the whole litter at time so its worth enquiring to your breeder and maybe warn the others, the symptoms can appear up to 4 months if I read it right.

Good luck and let us know how your pup goes!!!!

xx

Thanks for the kind wishes and the link - it is very interesting.

Yes DT, that is something I have been talking about with a friend who also believes it could be the jabs. Our puppy had his 2nd jabs on the Monday - the eye infection that started all this appeared suddenly on the following Friday, with other symptoms a few days later. Is the 2nd jab the lepro one??

Today he had another burst lymph node. It is really awful and there doesn't seem to be anyway of knowing how many of them might burst. I just would like to know that there is light at the end of this dark tunnel.

Re: Juvenile Cellulitis - horrible illness in young puppies

This is also known as puppy strangles and there has just been a discussion about this on another forum it is horrible but all those who had experienced it had got through it with aggressive treatment and now have happy healthy puppies although they should not be bred from. If the OP sends me a message I will copy the posts to her.

Otherwise how is the puppy?

Re: Juvenile Cellulitis - horrible illness in young puppies

Hi all,

I did go back to the breeder for advice and it appears another puppy has had a much milder form of JC. He has now stopped breeding the parent dogs, and has been really helpful in caring for the puppy.

Anyway puppy has so far had 5 lymphs burst - which is an awful thing and leave big gaping wounds. He is on strong antibiotics as we obviously have to be careful about infection etc. However, in himself he is fine!

Once the wounds clear up, we can hopefully get back to having a normal healthy puppy again! He is slowly improving, so fingers crossed no more shock surprises with this most awful disease.

Regards
