9 wk lab pup, sickness and diarrhoea

Hi i'm new and after some advice please,

I have a 9 wk old yellow lab bitch called Poppy. I have had her for a week and she has had her first set of injections and been regulary wormed. She hasn't been on walks yet under the advice from the vet until her 2nd lot of jabs, she does however go in the garden. She has been doing great until today when she started with runny poo(sorry to be graphic) and then she vomited(twice) which she then promptly ate before I could clean it up.
I have 2 questions, the 1st should I be worried about her upset stomach and should I continue her normal feeds, and the vomit eating thing is that normal?

Any advice most appreciated
Mel

Vomiting eating is very normal, unfortunately. Its a dog natural instinct to eat their poop or vomit so they cant be followed by predators. I read putting curry powder on their poop or vomit will prevent them eating it. (I appreciate, its not something you'll always keep handy ) Worked a charm for me!

As for the illness, im not qualified to help!! Just keep an eye on her. It's not too unusual for young pups to be sensitive in their new home. I wouldnt be too worried, but if she's the same in a few days and hasnt eaten then take her to the vets. Where did you get her from?

Hi, sorry your pup is poorly.

If she seems ok in her self i would starve her til this evening then just give her a small meal, make sure she has plenty of fresh water.

If she isn't any better by tomorrow or is lethargic pop to the vet .

Thanks for replying, we got her from a breeder in Dyfed. She doesn't seem to be her usual self just now, so I will keep a close watch on her.

Definately. Puppys do sleep ALOT but she should have some bright periods. Feel her paws to see if they are hot and like you said keep an eye on her.

Pop to the vet if you are unsure at all as they are the experts

I personally don't think a puppy of this age should be left with something that could dehydrate them in 24 hours.
If this happens, you have got a very ill pup on your hands.
It may be just a 24 hour bug but I would get to the vet

Supply plenty of water for your puppy to drink, if it doesn't drink much you could always try to trick you puppy into drinking water.

This is what I done with Zeus when he ate alot of Chocolate.

Firstly I put my hands in his water bowl and moved them to get his attention, he didn't start drinking it, so I stopped, and scooped some water into my hands and he started drinking, then I moved my hand closer and closer to the bowl until my hand was in the water, I kept my hand there, just so he could gently brush it as he was lapping up the water, then slowly removed and he was drinking

I know not a very good way of getting dogs to drink, but it worked for me, in my moment of need.

Only do this if the puppy isn't drinking much.

Check to see if the puppy has eaten anything it shouldn't, berries, seeds etc

Also not a pleasant thing to do, but you could check to see if there is any blood in the puppies vomit or runny poos <--- Sorry to sound dramatic but it's best to be safe.

And check into the vets

Re: 9 wk lab pup, sickness and diarrhoea

Im with rona on this one. Whilst an adult dog can cope with vomiting and the runs for a couple of days, a puppy as young as yours really should see a vet sooner rather than later.

I made the mistake of leaving Oscar with this when he was ill within 48 hours of me bringing him home. I left him 24 hours to see if he would improve and he went downhill so rapidly he ended up on 2 drips, stayed at the vets for 3 days, and almost died.

Its never worth risking, and always worth the vets bill in the long run.
