Guide Dogs

You know how dogs who are going to be trained as guide dogs get fostered until they are about a year old, which is when they start training them.
Well I saw a Labrador puppy, which must have been about 4-6 months old and all it was, was skin and bone, I've seen plenty of Labs being fostered and have never seen one looking so skinny like this. You could see it's ribs =[
It really upset me, as many will know Labradors are pretty chunky, it seriously didn't look like this one was getting fed too well.

Re: Guide Dogs

The working line labs aren't chunky but that dog does not sound healthy. You should never be able to see a dogs ribs.

I agree, but it doesn't sound healthy at all. The possibilities are that it's ill but it doesn't sound good. Not a good sign if you can see a dog's ribs.
And here's me on the waiting list for withdrawn puppies...

Re: Guide Dogs

That's shocking. I thought people who foster got alot of support and contact. Surely someone from the association would notice

Kiskasiberians will become famous soon enough
Re: Guide Dogs

I used to puppy walk for Guide dogs and you do get regular visits as well as regular vets appointments. If there was anything wrong this would be picked up by the vets (If my memory serves me right you have to go to the vets either once per month or once every 6 weeks to check weight etc.)

They are also on a monitored diet which is all noted on a diet sheet stating how much you have to feed per day at each stage. Most of the Lab puppies are on the skinny side.

I recently met with an old blind lady that has a 9 yearold called Jasmine that I fostered and even she was surprisingly trim and in perfect health.

Re: Guide Dogs

If it had working lines in its pedigree, this could have been quite natural as they do go through a very leggy stage at this age.
Also the dog may have been recovering from an illness

Re: Guide Dogs

It may be wrong to jump to the conclusion that this puppy was being under fed.
There are many reasons dog, including young ones, lose weight, and before passing judgement and automatically assuming they dont feed the animal, maybe we should think about the various other reasons that could contritube to its appearance.

Oscar was skin and bones until he was about 2 and a half. I fed him, i fed him LOADS, but he couldnt keep weight on. He was weighed weekly, and had every test under the sun performed on him, yet nothing was ever found. He was just very active, and like some people, never really put on much weight.
I'd hate to think that people who saw him would assume i was cruel and didnt feed him, without knowing the full facts of his situation.

Re: Guide Dogs

No need to be sorry, you were obviously concerned.
I was trying to give you alternative reasons for a thin puppy.
Partly to hopefully prevent you worrying too much
