Sensitive Tum - Help!

Bailey is 6 months old and we've had him for 6 weeks now.

When we got him from the rescue centre he was being fed Bakers so we changed him from that to Beta puppy food for large breeds which he likes and is fine with.

Over the time we've had him we've tried introducing various things to him and we've gradually discovered that he's dairy intoleraant and also we think, wheat. If you give him cheese or bread or sausage or pretty much anything (except chicken) it just runs right through him.

He was getting his Kong stuffed with Kong stuff for sensitive tums but I couldn't get it in the shop as they had run out so I got him some of the liver flavour stuff. This, combined with some treats in his Kong which were not Coachies (which seem to be only treats that don't upset him) but more like wee biscuits, have given him the runs again.

I'm at a loss as to what to give him in his Kong other than Kong stuff for sensitive tums and chicken. I just wondered if anyone had any ideas about what I could try him with that's not likely to upset him?

Thanks!

Re: Sensitive Tum - Help!

You could try Naturediet, it seems to be tolerated well, even by sensitive dogs.

Are you still feeding Beta? Its not the best food out there (ive recently looked at it). For sensitive dogs, feeds like JamesWellbeloved and Burns are among the best. Dairy and wheat free, and designed especially for dogs with dietary intolerance.
If you go to their websites, they will send you free samples to try.

Re: Sensitive Tum - Help!

Hi
Well done for taking on a rescue dog.
How about putting some Bovril diluted really well with water and freezing it.
It's a bit awkward cos you have to block the bottom hole and wrap in a plastic bag, but dogs love it It's mainly water so good for sensitive tums
Might be best to have two kongs if you do this

Thanks for the replies.

I like the Bovril idea and will get some today and try that with him.

He seems to be doing okay on the Beta at the moment but will definitely consider changing it at some point, especially if it causes him any upset.

Re: Sensitive Tum - Help!

i too would try naturediet

I would also suggest soaking the beta and then using that to stuff the kong before freezing it.

You could try other things like mashed cooked carrots, minced cooked chicken, mashed banana (any could frozen or not)- try these things first though slowly before stuffing the kong.

If he is intolerant to wheat then beta surely isnt ideal? Its full of cereals and meat isnt even the top ingredient. If its suiting him then maybe he isnt wheat intolerent.

Arden Grange large breed (the equivelent of the beta) has chicken as the top ingredient and maize is the 3rd. Their sensetive food is free of all cereals, and has potato as the filler.

Burns (another one reccomended for sensetive tums). They do a chicken and brown rice - no maize.

hope it helps x

Re: Sensitive Tum - Help!

Thanks again for all this help.

I must admit to being a bit confused with all the choices of food available

And yeah, maybe it isn't wheat since he seems to do okay on the Beta...hmmm, I think I need to do some more research about this and maybe change his food to the Arden Grange or Burns.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the advice!

Re: Sensitive Tum - Help!

Was thinking about this earlire.

What about rice cooked in water thats got bovril in it? - gentle on tum, keeps the flavour and easy to stuff in a kong

Re: Sensitive Tum - Help!

Hi
I know the nightmare of having a dog with food problems, my 3yr old cavalier has lots of food intolerances! We have tried lots of dry and wet food, including Burns, wafcol, Purina HA, Hills.
He was started on Beta puppy from the breeder but this was awful for him. With the vet we did an elimination diet. This is 1 protein and 1 carb he has never had before, i.e. things that don't appear in dog food. He was on duck and potato then pheasant and potato (dry food) for a long time and settled down. Then we settled on wafcol salmon and potato dry food for a year which was ok....still had bouts of upset tummy but not as bad.

Now he is on Purina HA salmon and potato and I give him tinned salmon with it. Also, he tolerates Natures diet fish, brown rice and potato which I am going to cook myself today and see what it's like!
Burns is such a brilliant food, if he tolerates it, it would be my recommendation....look at their website. Also Arden Grange website is amazing and they will reply to your emails too!

Good luck! I like the kong recipe ideas, I may try those too!
