What else could cause unproductive vomiting??

Other than bloat, what would cause a dog to attempt to vomit without bringing anything up? My dog has tried to be sick twice in tonight but is otherwise on great form and so I'm sure it's nothing too serious??

Re: What else could cause unproductive vomiting??

My dog always used to "boke" - usually after he'd eaten grass...

Oscar sometimes swallows rather large pieces from his shinbones (these 3 foot long rawhide chews) and will heave a few times until he finally brings the chunk up He sometimes does it with pigs ears aswell. It can take a few days.

Has he/she been chewing anything lately?

Re: What else could cause unproductive vomiting??

I don't give him rawhide as it makes him sick, and can't think of anything else that could have caused it. He was nibbling at the grass just after he'd been retching. I was going to call the vet just to be safe (I'm so paranoid about bloat!) but he's playing with toys now and running about like an idiot!?

I know dogs eat grass when they have an upset tummy, and the grass makes them sick to get rid of whatever is causing the upsetment? What dog is he?

He's a five year old boxer. We don't have much grass in our back garden unfortunately so I had to take him round the front!!
