Dog keeps nipping at his fur

I have a 7 1/2 monh old miniature Schnauzer and over the past few weeks he has constantly been nipping and licking at his fur in certain places around his back end and sides. He has been wormed, had flea mediaction and washed but he wont stop. Why would he be doing this - this started when the warmer eather came in and i was wondering if it could be anything to do with the fact that he needs his coat clipped as he always seems to be very warm. Do i need to take him to the vet?.

any comments greatfully received

thanks

Re: Dog keeps nipping at his fur

Hi and welcome!

Not being disrepectful but has he been wormed and defleaed with one of the recommended brands?

When you say rear end - do you mean his anus or just that area?

What are you feeding?

sorry for all the questions
DT

Re: Dog keeps nipping at his fur

I was going to post a list of questions too lol - but DT has covered them all!

Fleas are out and about again now, just had to re-do my order as i noticed one on Billy (i think it came in with my newest foster - although she was treated before she arrived) . I pick up the prescriptions from the vet and order online.

Diet can cause skin/itching problems

rear end - dogs main itchy spots can be just above the tail and again at the back of the neck i think. But if its his bottom it could also be worms, or even impacted anal glands. so many things it could be which is why the questions.

Re: Dog keeps nipping at his fur

I am sorry but it does sound like fleas!
We had a scnauzer and even though we treated him he would always get the odd one...fleas seemed to love him!
Bob Martins is crap to put it mildly and even though it is the cheaper option most owners seem to end up having to buy a more expensive and reliable flea treatment so money wasted in the 1st instance.
Have a look round his cheek area and tummy as these are classic areas to spot an unwelcome guest!
The warm weather we have had recently will accelerate the fleas making them more active both in movement and sexually so more fleas!
A friend of mine just texted me after we had chatted yest about a rash on her dogs belly and she has been treating the dog and the house so was sure it could not b fleas....it was, am about to ring her to make sure she has treated the car aswell!

My boy has a thing about bees and flies, during the warmer weather he is always looking at himself and grabbing at his fur if he thinks something has landed on him

I checked him last night and found no evidence of fleas as thats what i thought it was, could it just be his fur is warm because of the warmer weather, he still has his windter coat , getting clipped next week

Can you move enough of his fur to actually see his skin because it could be eczema, we had the same experience some years ago and it was eczema. I f it is try changing the diet dont know what you feed now but after trying vet prescription creams we changed his diet and it cleared up.

What are you feeding him? My Chihuahua did the same thing for years (nibbled at the base of her tail), after years of regular flea treatments and me washing all the bedding every 5 mins it turned out to be her food.
