Eye Problem.

Hi,

I got up this morning and Zac's eye's are swollen with yellow gunge in them i have been looking for information all morning and have come up with 'Dry eye' and 'Conjuctivitis'. I have bathed both eyes in warm water. I can't get into the vets untill tomorrow morning unless they get a cancelation tonight. I have posted a pic to see if anyone else has had this problem, also is there anything more i can do for him untill i get to the vets.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Colette

Re: Eye Problem.

make sure you use a differant piece of cotton wool on each eye as it will pass back and forth if you dont but it does looks like conjunctivitis, the vet will soon let you no your doing the best thing with the cleaning.

Re: Eye Problem.

Looks like conjunctivitus to me too! It should clear up within a week with drops from the vets, unless it's a more serious strain such as clymadial conjunctivitus. Likes been said; try and keep it clean, but use different pieces of cotton wool on each eye or you're just transfering the infection.

Re: Eye Problem.

It depends on the cause of the conjunctivitus. It could just be an allergic reaction which wouldn't be contagious but a virus or bacterial infection can be contagious to humans and other animals. Without knowing the cause its impossible to say.

Re: Eye Problem.

I doubt it would be conjunctivitus on it's own, it could possibly be all down to entropion which is very, very common in Bulldog breeds.

Here's some information for you...

Quote:
What is entropion?

Entropion is the inward rolling of the eyelid, most commonly the lower lid. This irritates the surface of the eye (the cornea) and may ultimately cause visual impairment.

Entropion is a common hereditary disorder in dogs. Selection for a particular conformation, of exaggerated facial features with prominent eyes and/or heavy facial folds, has created or worsened this problem in many breeds.

How is entropion inherited?

It is likely that ectropion is influenced by several genes (polygenic inheritance) that affect the skin and other structures that make up the eyelids, the way the skin covers the face and head, and the conformation of the skull.

What breeds are affected by entropion?

This problem occurs in many breeds. It is particularly severe in the mastiff, bullmastiff, Shar pei, and chow chow.

Entropion is seen in the Akita, American Staffordshire terrier, american bulldog.

Entropion is corrected surgically. If possible it is best to delay surgery until the dog is an adult since the involved facial structures are still growing and changing.
Hope this helps.

Re: Eye Problem.

Instead of just warm water use salted water (saline solution ) the salt as an actibacterial use cooled down water from a boiled kettle this will be sterile , about half a mug and put about 1 tsp of normal salt into it let it disolve and use seperate pices of cotton wool for each eye whipping from the inside out . this wont clear up on its own though you will need drops or cream from the vets and will usually clear in 4-7 days depending on severity . can be caused just though a germ or dirt or sometimes in the summer our dogs get it through walking in long grass .
