Question Is a swelling around the site of the jab normal?

Hello, our puppy had her first jabs on Wednesday 11th. Today I've noticed a swelling on the back of her neck about the size of a broad bean, under the skin, around the site of the injection. Does anyone know if this is normal?

Thanks so much x

Can be!
Sometimes u get an injection site reaction which normally goes down within 24-48 hrs. They sometimes cause a minor irritation n dog/pup will try n scratch the area. If still there mon or bigger ring vet.

Could be that he is having a re-action to the jab - certainly needs an eye keeping of it, and also if he looks lethargic, restless or his gums alter don't hesitate in calling the vet

OK, thanks for the quick replies . . . she's been quite playful today and not been trying to scratch the swelling (mind you it would be quite difficult as she is a shih tzu and only has little legs -ahhh)!

I will keep an eye. What kind of changes might there be in the gums and what would it mean? Sorry for all the questions

Re: Is a swelling around the site of the jab normal?

yes totally..... next time she has a jab, mention this to the vet and they can usually use something different. Poppy doesn't get it with her boosters etc, just certain types of antibiotics.... it's normally just a haematoma, If you are worried or it doesn't go down in a week or 3 give the vet a ring to ask advice..... just to check, it has only come up since the jab hasn't it?? if you are worried just go see the vet xxx

Don't actually think that the vacs could have affected the gums - but should there have be other symtems checking the gums is a good way of telling
have attached a link for future reference something worth looking at

Re: Is a swelling around the site of the jab normal?

This can be normal, my dog had something similar around the size of a pea after her first jab, i consulted my vet who said it was not an allergic reaction, just a lump that had appeared due to the jab penetrating a little to far into the muscle, however if you are worried or notice any other changes, take your dog to the vet
All the best
Abi

Just thought I'd update to say the swelling has totally gone now so it must have been just a reaction. Thanks for all your replies xx
