Puppy vaccinations

My Shih Tzu puppy had her first vaccination at 8 weeks old and the vet booked her in for the second 3 weeks later. For various reasons I rang the vet yesterday to ask if they could be brought forward to this week (she will be 10 weeks old) and the vet has agreed. She just noted that she has made it 11 weeks as she was then quite small (she has grown considerably!)

A friend told me today that she had a puppy which was vaccinated too young, the puppy became very ill and subsequently died.

The vet has reassured me today that it will be fine. I know I am being overanxious but am wondering whether to leave it another week. Anybody had problems with side effects from vaccinations?

Re: Puppy vaccinations

The main problem with vaccinating too young is that the puppy still has antibodies from the mother and therefore the vaccine doesn't 'take'. This then leaves them without protection from the diseases they should be vaccinated against.

My vet vaccinates at 8 and 10 weeks anyway.

Re: Puppy vaccinations

My tiny Chihuhua x has just had her first jab at 8 weeks 2 days - the vet has booked her in for her second one at 10 weeks 2 days = 2 weeks after the first one.

Re: Puppy vaccinations

Holly had hers at 8 weeks and the 2nd at 9weeks and 5 days by the breeder and my vet said I had to do the second one agian as it was too early and may not have been covered. She rang the company that make the vaccine and they said she was right and I had to have it done again for the sake of 2 days. Obviously her safety came first so I did, as Parvo is very bad.

Re: Puppy vaccinations

Thanks for the replies. Jasmine had her second vaccinations on Friday - she was then 10 weeks and three days. She was a bit dopey on Friday evening but has been fine ever since. Another worry over. Carole
