orijen or hill's j/d?

Hello, my dog has elbow dysplasia and the vet recommended I feed hill's science prescription j/d. At the moment he is still on orijen puppy which I am bout to change to adult (he is 11 months old...)
When I took hill's bag home I looked at the ingredients and they look much inferior to orijen, orijen already coms with glucosamine, condroitin and fish oils and not once the word derivatives (unlike in the hill's ingredients) is mentioned....

what would you do? orijen is high in protein and with no fillers and I am tempted to keep him on this brand, but on the other hand I don't want to cause his joints any stress

what should I do!!!!!???????

thanx!

Most vets are paid to sell Hills.

Re: orijen or hill's j/d?

Not that I have any knowledge of Orijen or any evidence to support my worries but I have always been a little concerned as to the protein levels that the food contains, I am sure someone will come along and tell me my worries are unfounded by I have always tried to feed around 27% to my dogs when they are still growing.
regards
DT

Your vet has probably never heard of Orijen. I would stick with the Orijen, it is far better than Hills.

Do a bit of research on the web regards dry dog food ingredients if you need to satisfy yourself why you feed your dog Orijen. I think you will stick with it.

According to what I have read, if a dog has a problem with the protein in a food it will usually be the quality of the protein rather than the quantity i.e. animal protein substituted with plant protein from grain.

Mainly through overfeeding though no? There is a lot of overweight puppies out there and some very overweight puppies.

Stick with Orijen it is far superior to Hill's. The high protein is not a concern as it is drawn from high quality meat sources, protein drawn from grains is considered low quality and in high quantites can cause behavioural and health problems.

I would stick with the Orijen, vets always try to push Hills cos they get paid comission.

Re: orijen or hill's j/d?

I am going to tell the orignal poster one more time! DO NOT stick with the origen without asking your vet if you dog have any problems involving the liver! the liver cannot cope with high levels of protien. Please ask you vet if protein levels are a major factor relating to your dogs illness.

For information when my dog was in he final stage of her illness she had to go on the lowest amount of food possible!

PLEASE ask you vet - also there are other foods equally comparatable with hills!

Have just noticed it is ED - still check with the vet if the protien is of major importance!
