Thumbs down Puppy poo _ again!!!

Sorry this is another thread on puppy poo again, but I'm after advice as to what you all think I should do?

Long story I'm afraid but.... Zach's fed on arden grange which he's done really well on, good poos, growing well, lovely coat, etc (oh and about two cooked eggs a week in addition).
But at 17wks old (2.5wks ago) he started bringing up bile in the night (not everynight, but about three times in 7/8 days). He was on four meals (of 100g each) a day at the time, and his last feed was 7-8pm then first feed 6am. I posted a thread an someone suggested it might be due to the length of time his stomach was empty, producing excess bile. Which seemed logical.
So I changed his feeds around a bit to 3 main meals a day, and one small handful just before bed. Because he was also showing signs of hunger at the time I increased his main meals to about 150g a time. All went well for a week - no sickness, good poos, no hunger signs.
Then saturday his poos went all loose, didn't worry as he'd drunk water from the canal so I was half expecting it, however the looseness continued Sunday and Monday. So yesterday I reduced his food back down to about 400k a day in case it just that I'm overfeeding him, but no change.
The last three nights he's had us up in the small hours needing to go outside, where he strains and does (you guessed it) sloppy poos.
What do people think? Do I give the reduced food more time to have effect? Do I give up the last evening handful, in the hope that that at least stops the nighttime poos? Do I go back to four meals a day? Or do I go to the vet?
He's teething and loosing teeth at the moment too.

Other than the poo, he's happy, playful not at all subdued, eating, drinking and sleeping normally. he's not rushing to the loo, apart from in the night. I don't think he's eating any plants he shouldn't be. He's not having unusual treats.
I just can't think why the foods rushing through him. Opinions please - what do I do??

Many thanks for reading all of that!

Sh xxx

Re: Puppy poo _ again!!!

Zach's been on Arden Grange since weaning and although he has done really well on it in every other respect (like your Zach - shiny coat, no hyperactiveness, just generally healthy and happy) we have found he often has periods of a few days with runny poos - it seems his poo has never been 100% right. We feed him the minimum suggested, rarely give him ANY treats except the odd puppy bonio as he has such a sensitive tum, and he still had those few days now and then of sloppy poo. I spoke to the vet and he suggested adding bran to his food, so I now suppliment his 2 daily meals with a handful of bran (normal bran from supermark). This does seem to have done the trick, although I feel its a shame that he has to have that added just to have a normal poo!! I'd like to feed RAW as I have heard so many great things about it, but its just not practical at the moment, so I am changing him over to Skinners which I have heard people raving about, and as it is a working dog food it is around £17 for 15kg (Arden Grange around £40 )... Hopefully if Mummy's pocket feels better so will Zach's belly!!

I have no idea about this bile thing though, maybe its worth taking him to the vets just in case? Could have a nice chat about it and clear your mind of worry

Thanks Louise (my personal guru!!), that sounds very similar. I'll have a try at the bran and keep my fingers crossed. I know I'm over sensitive anyway about how Zach's dietary functions are because of how we lost our last dog (we didn't know there was anything wrong until sloppy poos during the night and within 3 days he collapsed and died due to a stomach tumour which had caused a ruptured spleen - no other symptoms) and Zach is my first pup, so I'm a bit of an anxious first time mum!!
Once again, thanks for taking the time to give me advice - much appreciated.

Re: Puppy poo _ again!!!

There is a nasty stomach bug going round as my dog is just getting over it he had similar symptons to yours straining and then runny poo so in the end it was the vets for the usual anti Bs. So if your are worried see your vet.

My dog always had a very sensitive stomach, but was highly unimpressed with just kibble, so I looked into feeding raw. But like you came to the conclusion that it was not practical - especially in a busy house with work, hubby, 2 kids + dog! However, have now reached a happy compromise of James WellBeloved kibble in the morning, and Natures's Menu nuggets in the evening. Basically they are meat, veg and rice minced and frozen in just the right quantities and frozen. I just defrost overnight in the fridge and serve up.

Daisy LOVES it, and all the stomach problems are gone (i.e. no more scraping runny poos off the grass in the park - yuk!), coat and energy levels are great, plus I get the benefit of feeding raw when I want without the hassle.

They sell it all over the place but I get mine from Pets @ Home
