Car sickness

My poor little Northern Inuit Aleska is suffering from terrible car sickness. She has done from when we picked her up at 8 weeks (she's nearing 5 months now), it started with the drooling and occasionally she will vomit ,although i make sure i plan ahead with meals if im going out in the car. She is always relatively happy to get into the car and travels better in the front passenger footwell than in the boot with my other dog although she still floods the car with drool (its like a tap!).She is starting to get to the point that she associates the car with anxiety and its just making her worse

Anyone got any advise/ tips? I have tried feeding/treating her in the car without actually going anywhere over a few days then trying a short journey -all fine up until the point we begin to move and the drool starts instantly. I really would like to get this sorted as we are hoping to tour the uk in the summer with our caravan, but if she is still the same i fear it would be unfair to make her travel so far.

Someone suggested putting glucose powder in her water, anyone heard of doing this before?

Ang x

Re: Car sickness

Yes I'm afraid you have to keep going out with them and put up with the drool. I did try ginger biscuits put he decided to sick them up in the car. He is still not happy going in the car and still drools a bit I take an old towel so I can dry him off.

Re: Car sickness

Gypsy is a true drooler , when we brought her home she threw up loads , poor little thing ... since then I make sure she doesnt eat before a car trip , but she still slobbers everywhere

Toffee has always been fine in the car ... but then ive never met a dog (especially a BC) more laid back about life and all its ins and outs than he is

Re: Car sickness

Just persevere.

Keep going out on lots of regular, short trips. Go as short a distance as possible where you can stop, let doglet out for some free exercise.
keep doing this every day, and then start to increase journey times.

Your pup will grow out of it.

Re: Car sickness

Thanks - sounds like we need to just keep doing what we are doing!.

I have also bought some homeopathic drops that are for travel anxiety, made by a company called Homeopet. Will let you know how we get on!!

Thanks, Ang x

Re: Car sickness

HI my Vizsla suffered terribly with travel sickness, as the other say lots of short trips even if it is just five mins. I also tried a car harness this helped a little not sure why I think that she felt more secure than being in the back of the car. They also like to see where they are going as this can take their mind of it. She did grow out of it thankfully. I would say everytime you just nip to the shops just take her along with you, it might be a pain but it will be worth it inthe end.
