Puppy Diarrhoea Question

Hi my GSD puppy,Tess is allergic to chicken and Turkey. When I first got her she had constant diarrhoea,so I was feeding her chicken, egg, fish, cottage cheese and rice.Every time I tried to introduce the JWB turkey and rice she would get the runs again. My vet decided she had an allergy to chicken and turkey. She has been on JWB lamb and rice puppy food for the last week. For the first three days she had normal poos but now through out the day her poos go from being normal to running diarrhoea, she also has a sore patch in her ear which my vet says is due to an allergy.I have been giving her scrambled egg or fish+ bran with her food.Do you think she could be allergic to the lamb puppy food or its just taking time for her tummy to adjust?

Re: Puppy Diarrhoea Question

Some times can be a mine feild with dogs that have allergies i think that why people that have dogs with the allergie probs feed them on a natural diet some times as you know theres nothing added. Do a food diary also as its a good thing to be able to show your vet. Especailly if you start to notice a pattern with certain food stuffs. Sorry cant be more helpful. I know alot of people have trouble with certain cereals also.

Re: Puppy Diarrhoea Question

If her motions start off normal at the beginning of the day and then turn to mush later in the day it could be possible that you are over-feeding. If the bag says to give her 200g a day, I would knock that back to 150g a day.

How quickly are you changing over her food? Even with the same brand but different recipe you need to changeover gradually, say over 10 days, increasing the amount of the new food every couple of days.

Does she definitely have an allergy? Did the vet actually test for a allergic reaction? It could just be that she has a sensitive stomach. I have had two dogs with sensitive stomachs and to be honest, it is a case of trial and error to find a food that suits. You have to leave them on the new food for a couple of weeks after the changeover to ascertain whether it will suit or not. Yes, it will cost you a small fortune , hopefully you'll be lucky and find one quickly.

Re: Puppy Diarrhoea Question

My brother had a bit of fun and games with his bully and had tried many foods as he kept having the runs. He then swapped to natures diet and has never looked back he is fab on it so yes can be trail and error.

Re: Puppy Diarrhoea Question

Thank you so much for your replies. My vet didn't do an allergy test, she said they are very inconclusive. Its just since I had Tess she has had the runs and was on a very bland diet,as I explained before and her poos were never solid. She also had the itchy ears which my vet said was one of the first signs of a food intolerance. When I stopped the chicken and the Turkey we got solid poos.I added 10 grams per feed of the lamb JWB to each feed the first day then 20grams the next day and so on.I have noticed if I dont add fish or scrambled egg to her dry food and give her her full allowance she gets the runs quicker.I think I will do as you have suggested Jasps and cut back on the dried.I have also been keeping a food diary.I really wanted to get her onto the BARF diet but I dont want to do that until I can get her little tummy sorted out.
I have another doggy and have lost my beautiful GSD,Lottie about five weeks ago and I have been making them stews for years now but I dont think they will have the full nutrient content a growing pup needs

Re: Puppy Diarrhoea Question

Have a word with you vet and see what his thoughts are about putting you pup on either
Nature Diet lamb
or Nature diet puppy ( you will have to check the scource of protien with the puppy as it could well contain chicken)
If you call nature diet they will send you some samples - they also do a senative one which is fish based
regards

Re: Puppy Diarrhoea Question

I feed my Westie (as they are very prone to skin alergies from food) on Hypoalergenic Burns Pork & Potato, she had itchy skin in one patch at 6months old and after simply changing her over she has been fine ever since - no problems for the past 18 months! It may be worth givng Burns a ring also, as they may send you some samples.

The other thing, is has your vet tested a fecal sample in case it is something else (ie a type of parasite)? When i picked up my cavalier, she had runny poo which i put down to 'puppy poo', she would sometimes be ok, but it would soon go back to runny or loose. A fecal sample was taken and showed she had coccidiosis which is a parasite. Was treated and has been fine since, it may be an idea to get a fecal sample checked.

The lamb burns is not the hypoalerenic one, its the pork and potato which is as it contains no grains whasoever, and is apparantly very digestible - it explains it on the burns website, so maybe worth checking out.

I hope you manage to get a sample (not easy when they are poorly), i hope you can sort her out and on the right track.
