Re: drinking lots of water

there is nothing wrong with a dog drinking water, things to ask yourself include:
is he drinking more than usual or has he always drank this much?
What time of day is he drinking?
Is he drinking until the water is removed?

Your question is very vague, we need more info in order to help you.

Re: drinking lots of water

What type of dog is it? Heavy? Medium? Long haired? Short haired?

Has your mate got the heating on?

Change the food?

Rule out the simple stuff and then go see the vets if he's worried.

My friend had a permanent thrist until he went to the docs and they discovered he was type 2 diabetic. Best to get it checked out if at all worried.

Re: drinking lots of water

How much water is he drinking?
Has it just started?
Does he pee more than usual?
Is the pee a steady stream, what colour is it and is he straining?
You say he sleeps a lot but is he lethargic all the time or does he get lively when he wakes up?

Definitely need more info please.

If a dog is drinking excessive amounts of water there are lots of reasons, could be behavioural, UTI, Addisons, diabetes, kidney problems amongst others.

If in doubt its always best to get the dog checked out by a vet.

I have a friend whos dog was drinking excessivley, she took it to the vets and it was diagnosed with kidney problems, for one reason or another she actually had to limit its fluid intake. If your worried or its only just started to happen go to the vets and they should clear it up for you

I have a dog of 10 mnths who drinks excessively and urinates a lot and he has got kidney failure in the early stages! Luckily I took him to the vets to get it checked out. His urine litmuss paper test showed normal but his blood test showed elevated levels.

There is a possibility it could be something simple such as a bad habit but it is always wise to get a dog checked out that drinks excessively, other symptoms or not. If I had ignored my dogs symptoms I would have carried on feeding him as normal but now he is on a special diet to help reduce the load on his kidneys because his condition would have got worse a lot quicker if I hadnt!

I dont understand why your friends dog would say this unless they were withholding water to test for a certain disease of which the name I cant remember?
A dog with kidney problems should NEVER be restricted from water as this can be very detrimental in worsening the kidneys function. When a dog drinks excessively because of kidney problems it is because the kidneys are not flushing out the toxins efficiently enough so the brain sends a message from the kidneys to drink more water to compensate. That is why they obviously pee more and its very dilute.

It might be nothing to worry about or something as simple as diabetes but if it were me I would definitely go to the vet if it seems unusual just to be on the safe side.

Re: drinking lots of water

There are a several reasons why a dog could be drinking water excessivly - really I would suggest to your friend that she checks it out with the vet.

Re: drinking lots of water

My Samson drinks a lot of water. He would leak pee sometimes because his bladder was so full. I brought him to the Vet and we ran several tests over a couple of months. It turns out his issue is behavioral. He just likes to stand and drink. We have to tell him enough sometimes when he starts drinking too much. I would take him to the doctor to be checked out. It's better to rule out something serious. Drinking too much water can be harmful too.
