My friend's grandad (owner of very fat lab) died last year, and his mum has taken on the dog.
The lab is 10 years old, and I do not know the exact weight, but she is VERY fat. My friends mum is having difficulty getting her to lose weight, my friend is worried the dog will become ill due to her weight, so I have offered to take her for a few weeks to give her a hand, as we will be out in the country with loads of fields and beaches to exercise.

I know the vet will be the best to advise me how much I should be feeding her and what sort of exercise regime to put her on, but of course, any handy tips will be welcome!

I believ labs and Dally's are simular on the food front. They eat and eat and eat until there is no more no matter if they are hungryor not and they will find food anywhere and everywhere.

Candy did start getting fat becasue she was finding the kids crumbs of food on the floor and on the sofa and clearing the house and when the vet said she would have to lose weight before she went to stud i was ready to cry. but te vet nurse told me how to go about it.

1st the food i had to half what she was having at each meal
2nd was lots of walking and running but not to much to fast
If just cutting the food down didn't work she said go onto plain boiled rice and boiled chicken this is a filling food and will help the dog lose weight.

I was lucky Candy lost it just by cutting back her normal and she is still on that size meal and has maintain her weight level so i would cut the meal down to breakfast and dinner. depends on whats beng feed mine are on amix biscuit (you know the bold washin power cups i use one of these i had a spare one and steralized it measured what it holds and have used it ever since) they have a scoop of biscuits for breakfast it doesn't look alot but they aren't working dogs as pointed out to me! then for the evening meal they have once scopp of that and a 1/4 tin of meat.

BOTH dogs are bang on weight and they stopped losing it once they were there so i knew then this was as much as they needed IF i up the exercise i will need to at some point up the food but or now they get plenty of both.

Good luck its not an easy task.!

Re: How to get dog to lose weight?

When I got Bob he was 28kg which is a huge weight for a Border Collie. He was 18 months old with the energy levels of of an elderly dog. He struggled during the summer weather during the year I got him. I had to give him ice cubes to cool him down.

He was living on a farm, not worked but fed as a working dog. His previous owner commented about how laid back he was but the truth is that he didn't have the energy to be a true hyperactive BC.

The moment I got him I put him on a diet. I fed him on Autarky at the weight he should be and not the weight he actually was. I slimmed him down to 21kgs. Getting Tess also helped with his exercise as he chases her and tries to heard her when she cases her ball.

Bob now weighs 24kgs but has a lot of muscle on him as he gets a lot of daily exercise chasing a ball at the local woods and does Agility training. He is much fitter and more active at 6 and a half years old than he was at 18 months old.

I am so glad to have done this seeing him now compared with how he was.

Aero is currently on high quality food (not sure what but aparently it looks like rabbit food) I will be changing her to light food.

Not sure if I'll have any pennies spare for hydrotherapy, also it would mean having to drive an hour or so and we have no car at the mo.. but we will live next to the river and beach by then, and I know Dixie will be swimming in it!

I will work out her daily ration with the vet and take some of this out for treats. I have a huge extendy lead I can use so i can have control of her on walks without her feeling restricted, fortunately where we are moving to is very tidy village, no one leaves food on the ground

I am not asking my friends mum anything for this, I am doing it as a favour.

would soaking her dry food lesson the calleries?
