Castration?

Ok, my Shih Tzu is 4 years old. I never intended to use him for breeding or anything, but somehow did not get around to having him castrated.

Every time I go to the vet I get lectured about it and I was going to book him in for the procedure next month. However, can anyone tell me what the actual purpose of having this operation done is??

He is not aggressive, does not run off, does not hump things, and does not need to be calmed down. He very occasionally umm...exposes himself, but I am told that castration will not stop this? And even so, seems a bit harsh when all you have to do is ignore him until it goes away!

Thanks

Re: Castration?

You have no problems with your boy. Why put him through this trauma for no reason other than to line the vets pocket.

Re: Castration?

This is my feeling also...but they keep going on about how if he gets testicular cancer it's very hard to treat etc. and basically scaring me. But I just feel so bad for doing it to him.

Hmm.

There are advantages and disadvantages to neutering. Even with neutering animals can get cancer. Here's a link to show you the pros and cons:

Re: Castration?

it stops them roaming and escaping looking for females, protects against cancer.

we got both our dogs from rescue we got our collie castrated just after we got him and as Minni is in her season at the mo we are waiting for 3 months then we will be getting her done to.

The trouble is it also increases the risk of some cancers

Exactly...that's why i gave the link to show that they can still get cancer...and should not be pressured by the vets or anyone else.
