Home Cooked Food

Hi there

I joined the forum yesterday and asked some questions about home cooked food for my Staffie, Nelson. One of the replies suggested I post some questions on this thread. I am currently giving him white pasta, brown rice, chicken and vegetables. I have read somewhere that tuna in oil is good to give dogs once or twice a week. Am I doing the right things? Obviously I don't want to damage his health but I want to give him what is, I consider, the best food possible. I have had him on Burns for about six months now but he is getting really fed up with it and, I have to agree, dry dog food must get pretty boring!

Look forward to hearing from you.

Liz

Re: Home Cooked Food

As i always say, Tripe is best Mine have had dry dog food in the past but they always left most of it and they always looked like they was not enjoying it

fish with omega 3 can be added to dogs food, It helps flakey skin and gives a shiney coat .

Re: Home Cooked Food

Hi,
I have several recipies for home made dog food. One of our dogs has diabetes and, although he has a special prescription dog food (Hill's W/D), it is quite bland and he will not eat it on it's own.

Thus, several years ago we started compiling recipies comprising of the food groups he could have and I notice some simularities in the foods you are using. In general we use foods which are high in protine and fibre and low in fat (oils) and carbohydrates.

I have also learned all about the "problem feeder" syndrome and how to over-come it.

Top Tip: Add a chopped up boiled egg to their food to act as an appitite kick-starter. High in protine, low in fat and oil and most dogs love them!
