bassetmad is on a distinguished road
Travelling or living abroad (med area)

Hi,

we have recently returned from living in spain, we emigrated 3 years ago and took our basset hound with us.

took all the precautions needed to try and stave off leishmaniosis (sandfly disease).
devastatingly he still contracted it and wasn't picked up on until his kidneys started to fail, it was too late for treatment and we lost him a week later.

i did some research, and it seems uk bred dogs going to the med area no matter how you treat them for the sandfly, are susceptable to the disease anyway. 4 in 10 dogs contract it.

so just be aware if you are travelling abroad.

get a scalibor collar and back it up with x spot before you go.

Keep the dogs in at dawn and dusk, which is the worst time.

look for any signs of skin leishons, excessive water intake, lethargy, and going off food.

Our boy looked perfectly healthy until the week before he had to be pts, when he stopped eating overnight and didn't eat again.

just thought i would let people know, so if you do go abroad and take your precious pooch with you, be prepared

RIP pogo, still missing you...
