ojosmom is on a distinguished road
My hairless mixed breed is very itchy, help please!

Hi all. I am searching for some answers regarding our hairless mixed breed. He is about 5 years old, supposedely a mix of chihuahua, toy poodle and mexican hairless. He is like a Chinese Crested, with hair on head, paws and tail.

We rescued him in March so don't have much backgroud on him. He was fine all summer (and got very dark in the sun - didn't put sunblock on him as he just licked it off). This fall he started itching and scratching and breaking his skin open. Took him to the vet who prescribed a peroxide shampoo, a skin conditioner, Fish oil supplement, and Aveeno lotion. He got immediate relief from the peroxide shampoo, and was good for a couple of weeks. Now he is worse than ever.

He was on a high quality dog food (Orijen) but we switched him to a lamb based low allergy food. I've also recently started him on Skin-Eze:

Skin-eze From AllergicPet.com

Was hoping the skin-eze would be a cure all, but no results after 1 week.

The vet here is no help, the only thing they know about hairless dogs is from their textbook.

Looking for advice on what to use on his skin, and help pinpointing his problem. My mother in law was here for the holidays and remarked that he didn't have problems in the summer, so maybe a sun lamp would be beneficial to him?

TIA!!

I would imagine you would have to be very careful about sun exposure with a breed like this,my little dog gets irritated skin sometimes and i bath her with coal tar shampoo which relieves this.An allergy could be the reason.

Hi I own Chinese Cresteds. Going by your post re aveena lotion I take it you are from across the pond.
I tend to use E45 cream on my Cresteds daily although after shaving they do better with a Piriton tablet and some Aloe Vera to stop itching
If the skin is broken it can become infected usually a Staph infection that requires a course on Antibiotics (Keflex is best for skin) Malaseb shampoo is a good shampoo for itchy skin as well
If he did good with the Peroxide shampoo imo he is maybe suffering from Acne. Does he have blackheads and spots?
