Training rewards

Hi All,

I am expecting my first puppy in early March and intended to follow Gwen Bailey's reward based training. However, I have no idea what sort of small treat is the best for rewarding them. Some people say cereal but isn't it good to have an additional special treat of this nature to create more incentive.

I am interested to hear what other people use/recommend?

Thanks to all those that post.

Nighteyes.

Re: Training rewards

I use Tesco Cocktail Sausages for both the puppy and older dogs. One sausage will slice into about 10 portions.

It depends on the dog; some love cheese, small pieces of chicken, liver cake, tuna cake - the list is endless.

Hi,

Is this the treat you give for all rewards or just as a special one now and then?

Thanks for posting

Re: Training rewards

Again it depends on the dog/puppy. As mine get very few tit-bits, a piece of sausage is a huge treat. I always take a handful of kibble (their normal food - Arden Grange) when we go for a walk and if and when I call them to me.

To be honest mine prefer balls to tit-bits though.

Thanks. I guess I will just have to wait and see/trial and error.

Re: Training rewards

For just routine training I used to use Natures Menus treats They are relativelt small and you can break them to make them last longer anyway
the good thing is they are high meat and no nasties in them like a lot of training treats. You should be able to get them easy enough.

Another good natural type treat is the Barker and Barker ones
dogtraininginfo.co.uk - low fat natural dog training treats and food supplements, dog training equipment, harnesses, collars and leads.

You can actually make liver cake too thats easy enough, although it reeks the house out

For high value treats dogs love for the more diffucult training though, there is cheese, chicken, sausages and hot dogs, and usually anything liver based too.

Thanks again Sled Dog Hotel, you never fail to disappoint!

I think it's time for some Internet shopping.

The Natures Menu treats you ought to get in a good pet shop thats were I get mine, a local pet shop I support, You should be able to get them at pets at home, when I have gone in there occasionally Im sure I have seen them.

The Barker and Barker though Im pretty sure is only off the internet.
