How do you qualify for VAT Free dog food?

In order to get VAT Free food from Simpsons you have to agree that your dog is a 'working dog' in accordance with HM Customs. But how strict are these rules?
Can you claim the food is for a working dog if you only have a puppy who may or may not go on to be a working gundog?
If a gundog undertakes gundog training but then doesn't actually work on a shoot would that disqualify you? How rigorously would it be checked out?

Re: How do you qualify for VAT Free dog food?

I would of thought the chances of them checking were very small, after all you can go in a supermarket and buy VAT free dog food without signing anything. However if they do check they don't play nice and in court the burden of proof is reversed with the VAT people. After dealing with them before I wouldn't risk it just to save a couple of £

I have never thought of that before! Mine are fed Skinners Field and Trial which is VAT free and mine aren't working dogs. I just fed it as its well recommended on here and the woman I spoke to at Skinners said it was suitable for non-workers too.
